The Burden Of Diarrhea: A Survey Of The Caregivers’ Opinions And Perceptions Of Workload In The Intensive Care Unit, Martha Weatherhead, Alana Trottier, Paul Blakeslee, Erin Corica, John Dziodzio, Kristiina Hyrkas, Sonja Orff, Shawn Taylor, Elizabeth Turner

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

In the literature, the prevalence of diarrhea in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been reported to be 3.3-78%. The problem is significant to patients and also increases workload burden for ICU staff. Unfortunately, research on this topic is very limited; we found one single study on the impact that diarrhea has on nursing staff workload. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective chart review to describe the prevalence and impact of diarrhea in our organization. For the purposes of this study, we equated diarrhea with type 7 stools as defined in the Bristol Stool Form Scale. In January of 2018, we …

Educating And Engaging Elders In The Sure Steps® Fall Prevention Program, Karin L. Ciance Oct 2019

Educating And Engaging Elders In The Sure Steps® Fall Prevention Program, Karin L. Ciance

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

Purpose of this project was to determine the effects of reducing the incidence of falls for adults aged sixty five years and older living in their homes. Falls and accidents seldom “just happen” and many can be prevented. This project provided adults >=65 living in their home a safer environmental atmosphere and an ongoing exercise program. VNA staff received training at four additional office sites. The program decreased the fall risk for the sample group.

Health Information Technology (Hit) Experiences Of The Person With Heart Failure: A Descriptive Interpretive Phenomenological Mini Study, Pamela S. Kallmerten Oct 2019

Health Information Technology (Hit) Experiences Of The Person With Heart Failure: A Descriptive Interpretive Phenomenological Mini Study, Pamela S. Kallmerten

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

Sufficient research has been conducted to explore the lived experience of the person with heart failure. Gap in the knowledge is in regards to the lived experience of those with repeated hospitalizations and their use of health information technology (HIT) which can support self management. Purpose of this project is to describe the lived experience of using HIT by the person with heart failure who has been readmitted to the hospital within the previous six months.

Identifying Pragmatic Aspects For Succession Planning Needs: Conversations With Nurse Managers And Nurse Directors, Tammy Whitney Oct 2019

Identifying Pragmatic Aspects For Succession Planning Needs: Conversations With Nurse Managers And Nurse Directors, Tammy Whitney

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

A severe nursing shortage is predicted by 2020, and just as alarming is the likely shortage of nurse managers and nurse directors. Effective succession planning for nurse leaders affects recruitment and retention, patient outcomes, staff engagement, and finances. Preparing successors for leadership is imperative for hospitals to surmount challenges today and in the future. The focus of this project was to discover first hand challenges of succession planning and opportunities for developments.

New Graduate Orientation Evaluation: Are There Any Best Practices Out There?”, Jennifer Laflamme Oct 2019

New Graduate Orientation Evaluation: Are There Any Best Practices Out There?”, Jennifer Laflamme

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

In the current nursing shortage, a time when healthcare needs to get innovative with hiring and retaining new graduate nurses, orientation can be a factor in a new graduate’s decision to leave their place of employment. Efficient, cost effective, and safe orientations with clear expectations are necessary, including orientation evaluation. There is, however, little guidance in the literature on best practices for completing an orientation evaluation. Although scarce, innovations and evidence do exist, as do research opportunities, and those are discussed during this presentation. The purpose of this project was to describe, based on the literature, current evidence that seeks …

2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium

Description of research project investigating the use of multi patient simulations to identify competencies, evaluate performance, and determine effect on self-confidence and preparedness for practice.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the critical student behaviors identified by the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (C CEI © ) that are needed to achieve competency in a senior level transition to practice nursing course?
  2. Does the use of a detailed evaluation tool in simulation experiences increase interrater objectivity and reliability in assessment of behaviors required of nursing students?
  3. In senior nursing student nurses preparing to graduate, what is the effect of the simulation lab on …
