Increasing Equitable Cardiovascular Disease Screening And Prevention For Women Of Low Socioeconomic Status: You First, Isabel N. Martinez Daniel
Increasing Equitable Cardiovascular Disease Screening And Prevention For Women Of Low Socioeconomic Status: You First, Isabel N. Martinez Daniel
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the leading cause of death in females of all ages and races. Given the potential reduction in risk of coronary events with modifiable behaviors, primary care physicians are in a unique position to be able to use shared decision making and patient education to help dramatically reduce the potential burden of cardiovascular disease. Consideration for social determinants of health, such SES, should not be forgotten when aiming to provide adequate and accessible healthcare. Furthermore, the incorporation of unique programs, such as You First, into primary care offices can increase equitable care for patients and …

Background
The current opioid crisis is a significant public health issue in the United States, especially amongst women of reproductive age. In the last two decades, the rate of opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnant women has quadrupled. Women with substance use disorders (SUD) experience more sociodemographic and health disadvantages, pre-existing health conditions, and co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses than their counterparts without SUDs. They are also more likely to experience emergency department visits and hospitalizations during the antenatal period and less likely to utilize prenatal healthcare services.

Employment And Mental Matters Amongst Formerly Incarcerated Women, Convalecia Johnson, Monica Watford, Stephanie Riedmueller
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The purpose of this project was to implement a program for formerly incarcerated women to provide employment preparation and mental health resources to address recidivism. An occupational therapy lens was used to develop and execute this program. One on one Zoom sessions were held for participants to work on resumes and mock interviews for employment preparation. Participants were also provided with a resource guide for future reference. A mixed methods approach was utilized to analyze the data from the pre and post program surveys administered to the participants. Based on the results, the participants found the program to be beneficial …

Ot Employment Program Addressing Homelessness For Women Experiencing Homelessness, Amber Hoffman, Susan Macdermott
Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Women experiencing homelessness face many barriers to employment participation. Occupational therapy (OT) is a well-suited profession to address employment barriers; however, there is a lack of OT programs that address the unique barriers to employment participation for women experiencing homelessness. The purpose of the capstone project was to develop a program focused on employment obtainment and maintenance for women experiencing homelessness. The employment program was developed based upon the findings from an in-depth literature review and needs assessment.

Enhancing Leisure Participation For Women Who Are Experiencing Homelessness, Christine Truong, Susan Macdermott
Fall 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Opportunities to engage in leisure activities are limited for women experiencing homelessness (Klitzing, 2004). The purpose of this capstone was to develop a program for a residence serving women who are at risk of homelessness to improve their leisure participation and exploration. The needs assessment involved on-site observations at the Community Mission of Hope and Empowerment Village, literature review, client interviews, and an online questionnaire for volunteers and staff members. Although the program was not implemented due to time constraints and current programming already occurring, future sessions were outlined, and supplies were ordered through a grant to prepare for implementation. …
Listen To Her Heart: Bridging The Gap In Recognizing, Preventing, & Treating Ascvd In Women, Stephen J. Foley
Listen To Her Heart: Bridging The Gap In Recognizing, Preventing, & Treating Ascvd In Women, Stephen J. Foley
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is traditionally considered a male disease, yet it is the leading cause of death in women. This may be associated with the significant lack of research of ASCVD in women, leading to poor recognition, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The American Heart Association reports that a majority of women experience prodromal symptoms more than one month before a heart attack or stroke, and these symptoms are often underestimated. This project intends to help address the question: How can earlier detection of ASCVD risk in women reduce missed signs of acute myocardial infarction/stroke and thereby reduce preventable ASCVD …

Let's Talk Menopause: A Brochure Educating And Empowering Women In Menopause, Delaney Sztraicher
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
More than 6 million women in the United States experience menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms annually. Although up to 80% of women experience vasomotor symptoms, there continues to be stigma surrounding conversations of menopause and its associated symptoms. Due to this pervasive taboo, women often dismiss or ignore their symptoms. This neglect leads to greater utilization of healthcare resources and increased productivity losses with an ultimate economic burden of more than $810 billion in the US. Studies have shown that when empowered with education women feel better prepared to manage their symptoms. This project aims to dismantle the stigma by providing …

Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Breast fibroadenomas are common benign (non-cancerous) breast tumors made up of glandular and stromal (connective tissue) found in women of all ages. Fibroadenomas take on a solid lump feeling like a marble in the breast. They often cause no pain to the patient and are unilateral. There are four types of breast fibroadenomas: complex fibroadenoma, juvenile fibroadenoma, giant fibroadenoma, and phyllodes tumor. Each type has their own distinct characteristics. Fibroadenomas tend to shrink after a woman goes through menopause. While there is no medical treatment or medicine to decrease the lumps, surgical excision may be necessary if the lumps are …

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald F. Smith
Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald F. Smith
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women.
These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean …

Health Care Standards For Incarcerated Women In Massachusetts, Beth Williams-Breault
Community of Scholars Day—Posters
The general health care disparities among incarcerated women are vast, although when women are imprisoned, they gain a constitutional right to health care that doesn’t exist outside of prison. However, no federal government body has established national standards for medical care in prisons. This research project serves as a public health policy memo to the Bureau of Child, Adolescent, and Family Health of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) recommending accreditation standards for county and state correctional facilities for women.
