Communication Approach For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Picture Exchange Communication System, Melissa Davis
Communication Approach For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Picture Exchange Communication System, Melissa Davis
2023 SLP Posters
There is a range of intervention approaches for individuals with autism who have minimal verbal expressive language. This study reviews a commonly used low-tech option known as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to teach functional communication to individuals through a multi-phase process. Through different research findings, the study will demonstrate factors influencing the effectiveness of PECS for communication development at a school setting. As seen in Ganz et al. (2012) meta-analysis, it has been determined that PECS can be effective in developing functional communication for individuals with autism.

TSOS Interview Gallery
Four women share with us their daily lives in Afghanistan. Join them as they express their love for the country, the people, and each other; and as they share with you their deepest fears and most intimate moments.
They refuse to be silenced as they journey through this new, uncharted chapter in Afghanistan's history.
We at TSOS are honored to provide a platform for their voices to be heard. We will post entries as we receive them. For safety purposes, names have been changed and only avatars (designed with input from each woman) will be used.

Cyberbullying: A Resource For School-Aged Children, Adolescents, And Parents In Milton, Vermont, James K. Rohwer
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Cyberbullying occurs when harmful words or actions by one or more persons are intentionally and repeatedly directed against another person in the digital world through text message, social media, e-mail, apps, online video games, forums, etc. Today, more children and adolescents are connected to the internet than ever before, which puts them at risk of becoming victims of cyberbullying. Many victims, as well as parents of victims, may not be familiar with the resources that are available to them in the areas in which they live when concerns of cyberbullying arise. Therefore, the goal of this project was to create …

A Community-Focused Approach To Reduce School Bullying In Northeastern Vermont, Istvan F. Kanyo
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
School bullying affects one in three children in the United States and represents a public health burden as students’ absentee rates increase. It also increases the risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. Public schools often place a major focus on minimizing bullying through educational programs and punishments. However, more work has to be done to educate caregivers within the school system on how they can reduce the effects of bullying. The goal of this work is to provide an educational resource for parents that details a community-oriented approach to intervene with school bullying. Caregivers can find statistics on bullying, …

E-Cigarette Prevention Among Vermont Youth, Tyler W. Wark
E-Cigarette Prevention Among Vermont Youth, Tyler W. Wark
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
E-cigarettes are increasingly used by U.S. adolescents, a trend that is particularly troublesome from a public health perspective because they have been linked to conventional tobacco smoking. In Vermont, recent data from 2015 reports that 30% of high school students ever used electronic vapor products. At present the scientific, regulatory, and lay communities all have a dearth of quality information regarding e-cigarettes and their potential adverse health effects. This school-based intervention aims to promote awareness and educate at-risk youth in the Milton School District about e-cigarettes through an educational fact sheet and health blog post.

In 1974, YSN opened it doors to a unique program, originally called the three-year non-nurse college graduate program. Today it ts called the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing or GEPN. Simply put, during GEPN, the students learn to become a nurse. They will be caring for patients by the end of the second week at YSN because this program models adult learning principles-make it real and they will remember and perform quicker; when taught in the clinical context, it is real. Our hope is that they will continue recording their experiences that will ultimately serve as a record of their …
