Skin Cancer, Skin Biopsies And Mohs Surgery: Patient Education, Negar Esfandiari Jan 2021

Skin Cancer, Skin Biopsies And Mohs Surgery: Patient Education, Negar Esfandiari

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. There are three main types of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. While Melanoma is less common than Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinoma, it has a higher mortality rate. If diagnosed in earlier stages, Melanoma has a significantly better prognosis and lower patient costs. Most skin cancers are diagnosed through skin biopsies. Vermont has one of the highest rates of skin cancer. The goal of this project was to develop a patient handout to bring patient awareness to skin cancer and describe the different …

Sun-Safety: Assessing Barriers And Promoting Sun-Safe Practices For Vermonters., Joy A. Benner

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Skin cancer continues to be the most common cancer in Vermont and the United States. About one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Vermont currently ranks second highest in the country for melanoma skin cancer rates. Rates continue to rise and skin cancer is impacting patients at younger and younger ages. Although several factors play into development of melanoma, a large risk factor for developing skin-cancer in one's lifetime is UV exposure. One way to combat this is to encourage regular sun-safe practices, such as daily sunscreen use, seeking shade, and wearing sun-protective clothing. The aim …

Melanoma Surveillance, Samuel Logan Jan 2019

Melanoma Surveillance, Samuel Logan

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

According to the CDC, in 2015 the rate of melanoma of the skin was 22.1 per 100 thousand people, the sixth most common cancer. In Vermont this rate was 35.8 per 100 thousand, higher than the national average. In Berlin, VT, it was noted that patients often are concerned about their nevi, but often do not know when it is appropriate to bring them to their physician's attention. A pamphlet was developed to assist physicians in educating patients on the characteristics of melanocytic nevi and encourage patients to speak to their physician when they find moles which meet these characteristics.

The state of Vermont has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer, and in particular melanoma, in the entire country. In fact, melanoma is the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in Vermont. The purpose of this project is to determine the impact of skin cancer on the state of Vermont and to develop a patient-centered educational brochure in which to educate patients on skin cancer and ways to prevent it. Creating An Effective Education Pamphlet On Sun Protection And Skin Cancer Prevention, Alexandra E. Brown

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Melanoma and other skin cancers are increasing in incidence in the United States. In Connecticut, the melanoma rate is higher than the national average. The public health cost of skin cancer treatment ranges from $2-$8 billion annually. The costs to the individual are also high and the diagnosis of an advanced stage cancer is always emotionally challenging for a patient and his/her family. Efforts should be aimed at primary and secondary prevention of skin cancer, and patient education is an important element of this goal. The creation and use of patient education pamphlets can help to increase patient awareness of …
