The most at-risk population among women for HIV diagnosis in the U.S. are Black women, who account for 61% of all new HIV cases. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective HIV prevention method for people at risk of HIV acquisition. Despite being disproportionately affected by HIV, Black women’s knowledge, perceived benefits, and uptake of PrEP remain low. The socio-ecological model may be useful for understanding why there is a low uptake of PrEP among Black women by examining the complex interplay between individual, relationship, community, and societal factors. The current study used the socio-ecological framework to explore provider …

Proposing An Rna Interference (Rnai)-Based Treatment For Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv) By Analyzing The Post-Transcriptional Gene Targeting Of Sars-Cov-2, Hepatitis C Virus, And A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Arjun Jagdeesh
Undergraduate Research Posters
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects CD4+ T cell lymphocytes in humans, leading to the development of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) if left untreated. While current treatment methods, including antiretroviral combination treatments, effectively limit HIV replication, HIV can evade these treatments due to its high mutation rate. Long-term antiretroviral treatment can also be toxic to patients, meaning patients would benefit from a new mechanism of HIV treatment. RNA interference (RNAi) is an antiviral pathway found in mammals, plants, and insects that involves a small-interfering RNA that is incorporated into a protein complex called the RNA-induced Silencing Complex …
Promoting Safe Sex Practices And Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention In The Adolescent Population In Ridgefield, Ct, Gina Jin
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Adolescents are a uniquely at-risk population for the spread of preventable sexually-transmitted infections. Direct lifetime medical costs of sexually transmitted infections (per CDC) is nearly $16 billion in the United States. Nearly half (46%) of all new STIs in the country occur among young people (ages 15-24). Because of this, effective STI prevention in the adolescent population is important and should be further investigated.

BACKGROUND: 69% of new HIV diagnoses in the US are among gay and bisexual men, with disparities by race and ethnicity. Primary care providers increasingly provide HIV prevention. Racial and ethnic disparities in primary care access are well-documented, but their persistence among gay and bisexual men is unknown. We examined racial and ethnic disparities in access to primary care among this population.
METHODS: We used nationally representative person-level sociodemographic, health status and utilization data, and data on organizational- and socially determinant barriers to care, from the National Health Interview Survey, 2013-2018. Outcomes were: 1) general physician visit
RESULTS: The sample …

A Reason To Live: Hiv And Animal Companions, Vicki Hutton
Purdue University Press Book Previews
A Reason to Live explores the human-animal relationship through the narratives of eleven people living with HIV and their animal companions. The narratives, based on a series of interviews with HIV-positive individuals and their animal companions in Australia, span the entirety of the HIV epidemic, from public awareness and discrimination in the 1980s and 1990s to survival and hope in the twenty-first century. Each narrative is explored within the context of theory (for example, attachment theory, the "biophilia hypothesis," neurochemical and neurophysiological effects, laughter, play, death anxiety, and stigma) in order to understand the unique bond between human and animal …

Effects Of Hiv And Drugs Of Abuse On The Blood-Brain Barrier, Gopika Hari
Undergraduate Research Posters
Despite effective systemic therapy, HIV-1 infection within the brain results in neuronal degradation and neurocognitive dysfunction. This neurocognitive dysfunction is worsened in the setting of opiate abuse. The central nervous system (CNS) is protected by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a selective barrier regulating the passage of substances from peripheral circulation into the CNS. The BBB is composed of microvascular endothelial cells encased by basal lamina, pericytes, and perivascular astrocyte endfeet. Intracellular junctional complexes comprising of adherens and tight junctions are located between the endothelial cells and form tight barrier, preventing traffic of compounds between cells (paracellular flux). Clinical and in …

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
More than 1.2 million Americans are currently living with HIV and nearly 1 in 8 (12.8%) are unaware of their status. The incidence has been consistently around 50,000 new infections per year and of those newly diagnosed, the men who have sex with men (MSM) population carries the largest burden. Federal costs continue to rise for HIV/AIDS treatment nationally and this continues to represent a significant portion of healthcare costs here in Vermont. More needs to be done to prevent this chronic illness.
In 2012 the FDA approved a medication for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): Truvada. There is clear evidence of …
