A Pulse For Progress – Examining The Efficacy Of Best Nursing Developmental Care Practices For Children With Congenital Heart Disease At Risk For Developmental Delay In The Pcicu: A Prospective Quasi-Experimental Cohort Study, Jasmyn H. Jansen
Nursing | Student Research Posters
This paper examines the efficacy current best developmental care nursing practices in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU) for children with congenital heart disease (CHD). The proposed study explores the implications of the Cardiac Inpatient Neurodevelopmental Care Optimization (CINCO) program, a recent comprehensive developmental care bundle, as a universal implementation for PCICUs.
Role Of Suction-Based Airway Clearance Devices In Pediatric Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, Rebecca Braver
Role Of Suction-Based Airway Clearance Devices In Pediatric Foreign Body Airway Obstruction, Rebecca Braver
Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Capstone Presentations (Center City)
Introduction
- Foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Factors including pediatric anatomy, chewing and swallowing difficulties, developmental stages, habits and behaviors, and children’s toys and foods increase risk of FBAO in children.1,2
- BLS guidelines for FBAO management in responsive children ages 1-8 call for a series of subdiaphragmatic abdominal thrusts, which increase intrathoracic pressure to force air and the foreign body out of the airway.3,4 Abdominal thrusts have higher reports of injury compared to all other FBAO interventions, with risk of thoracic, vascular, and gastro-esophageal injury.5-7

Educating On The Impact Of Gravitational Insecurity In Children With Sensory Processing Disorder, Amber Pierce, Lisa Griggs-Stapleton, Elizabeth Mcbride
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Gravitational insecurity impacts 15-21% of children with sensory processing disorder, yet little to no research is available on the topic. Therefore, a program was created to provide education to therapists and therapy students in order to better provide education on the topic to others.

Supporting Motor, Cognitive, And Psychosocial Functions For Children And Youth With Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review, Quandra Shanks, Angela Labrie Blackwell
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to an injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma (Brain Injury Association [BIA], 2023). ABI is an umbrella term for all brain injuries, typically classified as traumatic (e.g., sports injury, fall) or non-traumatic (e.g., stroke, infection) (Wales et al., 2021). It is considered one of the leading causes of death and disability for individuals of all ages (Riccardi & Lundine, 2022). The BIA (2023) reports that ages 0-4 and 15-19 are at greater risk for brain injury. The severity of ABI among pediatrics is more severe than …
The Participation And Exploration Of Play For Children In Foster Care, Isabella J. Relph, Jazminne Orozco Arteaga
The Participation And Exploration Of Play For Children In Foster Care, Isabella J. Relph, Jazminne Orozco Arteaga
Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone project, The Participation and Exploration of Play for Children in Foster Care, was completed by a Doctor of Occupational Therapy candidate at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Project objectives develop an understanding of the occupational therapy involvement in foster care and how to improve current advocacy and educational efforts related to play. A literature review of play participation, engagement, and exploration was conducted in conjunction with analysis of environmental barriers, generalized background information on children in foster care, and the role of occupational therapy for children in foster care. Play is essential for the pediatric …

Conceptualization Of Intervention In Pediatrics Systematic Review, Kaitlyn Hansen, Mark C. Navin, Jason Wasserman, Stephanie Swanberg
Posters
Navigating when to intervene against parents’ wishes is a difficult task in pediatrics. Different frameworks have been proposed, but disagreements remain. One problem debated about in pediatric intervention principles often refer to different kinds of interventions (e.g. calling Child Protective Services, consulting the Ethics Committee). This project reports results of a critical scoping review of recent bioethics literature about the concept of pediatric intervention principles.

The Rising Rates Of Pediatric Health Conditions Due To Lack Of Nutrition Education, Amanda Healy
The Rising Rates Of Pediatric Health Conditions Due To Lack Of Nutrition Education, Amanda Healy
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Statistics show that there is an increase in childhood health conditions related to nutrition. Throughout the United States, the rates of childhood obesity have drastically increased along with the rates of type two diabetes. There is correlation between these two chronic problems in pediatric patients, but not all pediatrics diagnosed with DM2 are obese. Furthermore, there is a correlation between this increase of obesity/DM2 and the lack of nutrition education in schools. The public school system in the United States does not have the funding to provide adequate nutrition education to the children which is leading to substantial health consequences. …

Measuring Outcomes Of Occupational Therapy Facilitated In Natural Settings With Young Children, Amie Smith, Zoe Peters, Brinda Saini, Deepak Dale, Amanda Laccone
Occupational Therapy | Student Research Posters
To date, there is limited evidence to support the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy (OT) services delivered outside in nature. This study explored the benefits of OT intervention in Natural Settings (NS) for children by examining development in the areas of self-regulation, social skills, sensory processing, confidence, and motor skills. A quantitative, quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design was used in this study. Researchers partnered with a local outpatient OT clinic that offers an 8-week outdoor program. Seven children and their parents were recruited and participated in the study. A modified version of the COPM and two BOT-2 subtests, along with a novel log …
Incorporating Social Stories Into Patient Waiting Room, Ashwini Sarathy
Incorporating Social Stories Into Patient Waiting Room, Ashwini Sarathy
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Missed well child appointments are common across the country. In an effort to limit anxiety related to doctor's appointments, social stories were printed and offered to patients in the waiting room. The social stories went over common activities performed while at the doctor's office including taking blood pressure, height, weight, getting vaccines and physical exams.
