To determine possible therapeutic effects of oral lycopene supplementation on plasma insulin levels, lipid peroxidation, blood glucose levels, and the antioxidant defense system of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Classical biochemical methods were used to determine plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) levels. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine plasma insulin levels and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the levels of brain antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px). Results: It was found that the diabetes-related increase in blood glucose levels was reduced by supplementation …

Aim: The association between oxidative stress and diabetic complications is well known. The main goal of antidiabetic therapy is to prevent the complications of diabetes. Gliclazide (sulfonylurea) and metformin (biguanide) are two oral antidiabetic drugs that have been proven to prevent diabetic complications. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antioxidant effects of gliclazide or metformin. Materials and Methods: In this study, we evaluated 46 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The patients were divided into three groups according to their treatment modality of gliclazide, metformin, or diet. Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and catalase (CAT) activities …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Biological damage mediated by reactive oxygen species has been increasingly recognized in aging phenomena in recent decades. The increase in catecholamine metabolism is yet another physiological change in aging, predisposing the organism to supranormal hydrogen peroxide produc-tion as a by-product. This study was undertaken to investigate the alterations in oxidant- antioxidant status in rat cardiac tissue during aging. The effects of acute administration of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors on this status were also investigated to find possible preventive strategies in conjugate aging. MAO activities, malondialdehyde MDA and diene conjugate levels as well as superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were determined …

A Novel Clinical And Laboratory Based Approach To Coronary Heart Disease: Relationship Between Angiography Findings, Antioxidant Enzymes And No, Bülent Sözmen, Fevzi̇ye Uysal, Dervi̇ş Gazi̇tepe, Leyla Aslan, Eser Yildirim Sözmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Atherosclerosis is the most common manifestation of cardiovascular disease. However the exact mechanisms that take place in its pathogenesis have not yet been completely understood. Free radicals and lipid peroxidation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction also may be an aggravating factor in this process. Unfortunately all of the previous studies have focused on the atherosclerotic tissue. Our aim was to establish a relationship between the antioxidant enzymes and plasma nitrate as an index of whole-body, endogenous nitric oxide production in coronary heart disease and also the relationship between these parameters and the …

In this study, we investigated first; the possible involvement of nitric oxide and antioxidant enzyme level in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension and second we investigated serum nitrite-nitrate and antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles (total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, trygliceride) to determine the relationship between these parameters in atherosclerosis. 13 patients with coronary heart disease, 18 patients with essential hypertension and 16 age-matched health subjects were taken into this study. Plasma nitrite, nitrate levels were measured by Griess reaction, erythrocyter superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were determined by the methods of Misra&Fridovich and Aebi, respectively. Serum lipid analysis were …
