Csrp1 Expression Is Associated With A Mesenchymal, Stroma-Rich Tumor Profile And Poor Prognosis In Colon Cancer, Seçi̇l Demi̇rkol Canli

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Cysteine and glycine-rich protein 1 (CSRP1) is involved in the cysteine-rich protein family and is a marker of smooth muscle lineages. In colon cancer, the expression of this gene is associated with poor prognosis. In this study, the aim was to reevaluate its prognostic relationship in independent cohorts and explore potential underlying biological processes that are linked to aggressive behavior in tumors with high CSRP1 expression, such as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), stromal fractions in the tumor microenvironment, and consensus molecular subtypes (CMSs). Materials and methods: RNA sequencing (RNAseq)-, microarray-, and single-cell RNAseq (scRNAseq)-based transcriptomic data were obtained from public …

Comprehensive Comparison Of Clinicoradiological, Laboratory, And Prognostic Factors Of Community-Acquired Pneumonia In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Hospitalized Patients, Seyyed Hamid Hashemi, Fatemeh Saki, Shiva Borzouei, Rashed Bawand, Alireza Soltanian

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the leading infectious causes of mortality, and diabetes mellitus is a globally prevalent disease. Consequently, the cooccurrence of these two disorders can be common and create challenging medical conditions. Therefore, it was aimed to compare the various aspects of CAP in diabetic and nondiabetic patients, in order to have a comprehensive and comparative picture of the differences. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, CAP patients with and without diabetes were assessed for clinicoradiological signs, laboratory features, disease severity, and pneumonia outcomes. Results: Analyzed herein were 172 CAP patients (77 had diabetes and …

Tripartite Motif Protein 6 Promotes Hepatocellular Carcinoma Progression Via Multiple Pathways, Yifeng Zhang, Lin Yuan, Shanshan Cui, Song Wu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks among the most prevalent malignancies worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related death. The TRIM (tripartite motif-containing) protein family members had been reported to be involved in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Here we aimed to explore the expression profile of TRIM6 in HCC and investigate its clinical significance as well as underlying mechanisms. Materials and methods: We retrospectively enrolled 138 HCC patients that underwent surgical resection in our hospital and tested protein expression level of TRIM6 through immunohistochemical staining. The correlation between TRIM6 and patients? characteristics was assessed by Chi-square test. Log-rank test and …

Predictors Of Two-Year Mortality In Patients With Dementia With Lewy Bodies, Nesli̇han Kayahan Satiş, Mehmet İlki̇n Naharci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Data on adverse prognostic factors for mortality in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate two-year mortality predictors in patients with DLB. Materials and methods: Individuals aged ≥ 60 years with a diagnosis of DLB, followed by a tertiary-referral geriatric outpatient clinic from 2006 to 2021, were assessed retrospectively using medical or patient records. The mortality status of the patients in the second year after diagnosis was determined. Demographic and clinical characteristics were reviewed to determine their impact on mortality prediction. Results: A total of 108 patients with DLB …

The Possible Relation Between Temporal Muscle Mass And Glioblastoma Multiforme Prognosis Via Sarcopenia Perspective, Osman Sütcüoğlu, Zeynep Sezgi̇ Erdal, Orhun Akdoğan, Emrah Çelti̇kçi̇, Nuri̇ye Özdemi̇r, Ahmet Özet, Murat Uçar, Ozan Yazici

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and aim: The optimal sarcopenia measurement method in patients with a diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is unknown. It has been found that temporal muscle thickness (TMT) may reflect sarcopenia and be associated with survival, but the relationship between temporal muscle area (TMA) and GBM prognosis has never been evaluated before. The primary outcome of the study was to evaluate the relationship between TMA/TMT and overall survival (OS) time in newly diagnosed GBM patients. Materials and methods: The data of patients who presented at the university hospital between January 2009 and January 2019 with a confirmed diagnosis of glioblastoma …

Crm1 Expression: Association With High Prognostic Value In Laryngeal Cancer, Tali̇h Özdaş, Si̇bel Özdaş, İpek Canatar, Erdal Coşgun, Eli̇f Burcu Şenyurt, Orhan Görgülü

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Laryngeal cancer is a very common malignant tumor of the head and neck. While laryngeal cancer does not show any obvious early symptoms, it tends to have a poor prognosis in advanced clinical stages. Chromosome region maintenance 1 (CRM1) mediates the nuclear export of some RNAs, major and tumor suppressor proteins and has been associated with the pathogenesis of many tumors. However, the clinicopathological significance of CRM1 gene expression in laryngeal cancer has not been clarified yet. Therefore, this study aims to detect the expression of CRM1 in laryngeal cancer and to investigate its relationship with clinicopathological parameters and …
