Natural product extracts and chemicals isolated from natural products (e.g. plants, berries, seeds) have been commonly used in various types of traditional medicines. In addition, some drugs on the market today have been derived from natural product sources. The purpose of our study was to evaluate two natural products, Rhein and Thymoquinone, for as potential anti-diabetic and anti–obesity agents. Objective: To determine risk perception of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in health orientated majors at the University of Rhode Island and if perceived risk is significantly different in those who have trouble affording nutritious foods.

Methods: An email was sent to an academic advisor for the doctorate of pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, kinesiology, pre-professional health studies, nutrition, and health studies programs at the University of Rhode Island. This retrospective chart review is to evaluate the changes in personal health markers that serve as prognostic indicators in the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects in the Patient Assistance Liaison (PAL) Program at the Diabetes Resource Center (DRC) of the St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island Hospital for Specialty Care have no health insurance to pay for needed services and medications. It is desirable to know if the care they are receiving is equivalent to patients at the DRC that have prescription drug insurance from a third party provider.
