Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has changed our life worldwide. Vaccination plays an important role in this pandemic to reduce virus transmission and lower the mortality risk. However, as vaccination rates increase, so do the reported adverse effects. This report describes a case of 28-year-old female with severe subcutaneous swelling persisting almost 1 month after receiving the recombinant adenoviral vector vaccine (ChAdOx1 nCov-19, AZD1222), despite paracetamol prophylaxis. The ultrasonography showed a hyperechoic swelling in the subcutaneous layer and a diffuse hypoechoic muscle layer. The phenomenon results from delayed hypersensitivity, however, its clinical picture is often confused with cellulitis and …

Swallowing Function In Parkinson's Disease: Correlation With Disease Duration And Hoehn And Yahr Stage, Yi-Ya Pan, Hsueh-Pei Wang, Ruey-Meei Wu, Tyng-Guey Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a common complication of Parkinson's disease (PD). Swallowing assessment scales, videofluoroscopics wallowing study (VFSS), and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) are used to evaluate the swallowing function of patients with dysphagia. However, few studies have been conducted that assessed tongue muscle strength and hyoid bone movement in patients with PD. To better understand the correlation between disease duration, Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) stage and swallowing function in patients with PD, this study evaluated the swallowing function in patients with PD using ultrasonography and Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI). Ultrasonography was performed to evaluate hyoid movement, and …

The Use Of Ultrasonography In Suspected Tibia Plateau Fracture With Lipohemarthrosis: A Casereport, Wei-Nung Hsu, Pon-An Chen, Sen-Wei Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Knee pain is a common complaint in rehabilitation outpatient clinics. Plain radiography is typically used to detect knee pain and trauma. However, a slight depression plateau fracture could be easily overlooked on plain radiography. This is a casereport of a 57-year-old woman with left knee pain who visited the outpatient clinic for help. Ultrasonography showed fat-fluid level, but plain radiography did not reveal any fracture. Magnetic resonance examination confirmed the depression fracture of the tibial plateau and the lipohemarthrosis. Lipohemarthrosis is a highly sensitive predictor of intra-articular surface fractures. Ultrasound is a convenient and reliable tool to detect lipohemarthrosisof the …

For decades, ultrasonography has shown a high degree of accuracy in the evaluation of soft tissue tumors. In this study, we report the condition of a 80-year-old male patient who had been suffering from left thumb pain for 2 years. The patient had initially been diagnosed with de Quervain's disease, but responded poorly to conservative treatment. An ultrasonographic examination unexpectedly identified a well-margined solid tumor with marked vascularity. Suspicion of a neurogenic tumor led to an excision surgery and finally pathology revealed a Schwannoma. Following excision, the symptoms were entirely ameliorated. We concluded that, in the evaluation of persistent chronic …

Ultrasonographic Examination Of Tongue Movement During Articulation In Preschool Children, I-Chun Chen, Chien-Lun Peng Dec 2010

Ultrasonographic Examination Of Tongue Movement During Articulation In Preschool Children, I-Chun Chen, Chien-Lun Peng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Ultrasound imaging provides a unique and complete representation of tongue structure in almost all planes of interest and is rapid enough to record real-time tongue movement during speech. Recording tongue movement with ultrasound is non-invasive, and has not been shown to have any biologic effects in humans at diagnostic intensities. As a result, ultrasound has been widely used in speech studies to measure tongue functions in recent years. However, these previous studies are subject to inconsistent plane images caused by additionally movement of the traditional handheld transducer. The artifacts that result from depression of the submental soft tissue contacted by …

Ultrasound Examination Of Shoulders In Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia, Jiann-Perng Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang, Gwo-Chi Hu, Wan-Yi Shih, Kuan-Wen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Due to the prolonged use of upper extremities for weight-bearing, the shoulder joints of paraplegic wheelchair-users are prone to injury. Once shoulder pain occurs, performance of activities required for daily living would thus be disturbed. In past studies, the shoulders of the spinal cord injured patients were evaluated with arthrography or magnetic resonance images and the rotator cuff injuries were found. In the current study, we used ultrasonography to detect rotator cuff injuries of paraplegic wheelchair-users. The factors associated with ultrasonographic findings were also investigated.Thirty paraplegic wheelchair-users, 26 males and 4 females, were recruited for this study. Both shoulder joints …

Ultrasonographic Features Of Schwannoma Of The Lower Limb: Two Casereports, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Schwannoma is a benign encapsulated nerve sheath tumor. It typically develops in middle age with unknown cause and usually involves spinal root and peripheral nerves. We report two cases of schwannoma presenting as palpable mass over lower limbs. Both masses had heterogeneous hypoechogenicity, faint posterior enhancement, and were located eccentric to a nerve fascicle. Preoperative sonography revealed both patients had nerve tumors derived from nerve fascicles. These cases illustrate how sonographic information about the relationship between mass and surrounding structures can facilitate surgical planning.

A Pitfall Of Using Ultrasonography In Evaluating Ruptured Long Head Tendon Of The Biceps Brachii: A Casereport, Chien-Hung Shih, Chung-Che Lin, I-Ru Chen, Ya-Fang Lee

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a widely used diagnostic tool to visualize shoulder tendon pathology. The diagnostic accuracy for biceps tendon pathology is high. An empty groove may be seen when there is complete rupture, and the long head tendon markedly retracts into the arm. We report a case of ruptured tendon of the right biceps brachii in a 55-year-old male injured during pull-up exercise 2 years ago. Sonography demonstrated the presence of echoic material filling the bicipital groove. This material erroneously resembled the biceps tendon and resulted in a false first impression of intact tendon. However, a careful longitudinal scan failed …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has been utilized in rehabilitation medicine for many years. However, the accuracy and speed of the examination are very operator-dependent. It is often difficult for inexperienced operators to locate target structures quickly. We therefore designed this study to determine the best positioning for the transducer to detect the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii on shoulder ultrasonography. One hundred people (200 shoulders) were recruited, including 33 men and 67 women, with a mean age of 50.8±12.5 years. Patients sat upright with the arm flexed and the forearm supinated. The ultrasound transducer was placed on the anterior …

A Ganglion Cyst Of Posterior Cruciate Ligament Detected By Ultrasonographic Examination: A Casereport, Yu-Chou Hung, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Chein-Wei Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A ganglion cyst of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a rare condition and it is usually an incidental finding of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or arthroscopy. Recent advances in ultrasound technology and the development of high-resolution transducers have enabled detailed imaging of musculoskeletal structures. We describe a 21-year-old female who complained of left knee pain after a slip and fall. A sonogram showed an echo-free, multilocular lesion with posterior enhancement, just posterior to the PCL. A ganglion cyst of the PCL was suspected, and the diagnosis was subsequently confirmed by MRI. To the best of our knowledge, this is …
