The Influence Of Upper Limb Motor Function On The Activity Of Life And Quality Of Life In Stroke Patients, Wan-Ling Hsu, Chi-Tzu Feng, I-Shiang Tzeng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: This study attempted to investigate the influence of upper limb motor function on activities of daily living(ADLs) and quality of life(QoL) in stroke patients. We also wanted to reveal whether a disparity exists in ADLs and QoL for patients with different upper limbs impairment. Methods: A total of 57 stroke patients (mean age=55.55±13.11 years old, onset time= 1.57±1.87 years) were analyzed in the study. Methods used to evaluate outcomes included Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) for assessing the motor function of upper limbs; functional independence measure (FIM) for assessing the independent of ADLs, and stoke impact scale (SIS) for evaluating the …

Inter-Rater Reliability Of The Barthel Index Scoring Between Nurses And Doctors, Ying-Chao Lin, Yu-Tzu Dai, Tyng-Guey Wang Dec 2020

Inter-Rater Reliability Of The Barthel Index Scoring Between Nurses And Doctors, Ying-Chao Lin, Yu-Tzu Dai, Tyng-Guey Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The Barthel Index is not only used to assess the status of activities of daily living and the planning of rehabilitation program but also to hire foreign health aids as a qualification standard for patients in Taiwan. However, studies on the inter-rater reliability of the Barthel Index are lacking between nurses and doctors, who are common specialties in evaluating the Barthel Index in Taiwan. The present study evaluates the inter-rater reliability of the Barthel Index and related influential factors of assessment. This study was conducted in a rehabilitation ward of a medical center in the northern part of Taiwan from …

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu Dec 2009

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Health-related quality-of-life in the elderly generally encompasses freedom from disease, good physical and psycho-social well-being, and preventing the loss of function in activities of daily living (ADL). Some indices of ADL, such as basic ADL and instrumental ADL, are considered to be measures of functional status in the elderly. However, in most studies, functional status is evaluated by either the summed ADL score or disability score in one or more ADLs. No studies have investigated the association between an individual's ADL function and self-rated health status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of functional status (i.e., …

A Forty-Year Retrospective Of Assessment Of Activities Of Daily Living, Hsi-Ying Chang, Yu-Wei Hsieh, I-Ping Hsueh, Ching-Lin Hsieh Dec 2006

A Forty-Year Retrospective Of Assessment Of Activities Of Daily Living, Hsi-Ying Chang, Yu-Wei Hsieh, I-Ping Hsueh, Ching-Lin Hsieh

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and Purpose: The term activities of daily living (ADL) refers to the basic skills that a person needs in order to carry out the fundamental physical functions of self-care and independent living. In this survey paper, we reviewarticle the studies on ADL that involve theories of ADL, the concepts and items of measurement, and the test theory developed for ADL assessment. Unfortunately, the issues mentioned above have not been well integrated systematically. With this reviewarticle, we would like to provide a picture of past and current trends in ADL assessment.Method: We searched literature reviewarticles and rehabilitation or measurement textbooks …

Orthoses Utilization And Daily Functional Status In Patients With High Level Cervical Cord Injury, Yao-Ting Wu, Chin-Hung Tseng, Ming-Shun Wu, Chia-Li Chen, Chi-Ming Shih, Liu-Ing Bih Dec 2004

Orthoses Utilization And Daily Functional Status In Patients With High Level Cervical Cord Injury, Yao-Ting Wu, Chin-Hung Tseng, Ming-Shun Wu, Chia-Li Chen, Chi-Ming Shih, Liu-Ing Bih

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Patients with high-level cervical cord injuries are dependent in most activities of daily living (ADL) because they possess very little residual motor function. The utilization of appropriate assistive devices could enhance their independence and improve their quality of life.A prospective study was conducted with 11 male tetraplegic patients between 22 to 51 years of age (mean, 32.0±10.0 years), living in central Taiwan, with C4 or C5 cord injuries; the duration of their injuries ranged between 16 to 125 months (mean, 56.8±28.6 months). After a home visit and an individual interview, we found that these patients could perform 1 to 8 …

The Improvement Of Pain Symptoms And Activities Of Daily Living In People With Knee Osteoarthritis After Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid Injection, Carl P. C. Chen, Chih-Kuang Chen, Max J. L. Chen, Yin-Chou Lin, Tony H. C. Hsu, Ju-Wen Cheng, Simon F. T. Tang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a slowly evolving articular disease that appears to originate in the cartilage and affects the underlying bone, soft tissues, and synovial fluid. This condition usually occurs late in life, principally affecting the large weight-bearing joints such as the knee. It is particularly disabling when the knees are affected, because it limits the ability to walk, to rise from a chair, and to use stairs. The treatment selections for OA knees include analgesic drugs, physiotherapy, intra-articular (IA) drug administration, and surgical total knee replacement. We chose IA hyaluronic acid injection as the treatment method as it was documented as …
