The issue of mandatory nurse-patient ratios remains controversial among many vested stakeholders, including nurses, patients, physicians, unions, nursing organizations, researchers, employers (in particular hospitals), and federal and state governments (Douglas, 2010). The purpose of this DNP Capstone project was to determine if education of the M Nursing Professional Practice Model had an effect on customer satisfaction of nursing indicators in the Emergency Department (ED). The facility's newly developed M Model Nursing Professional Practice Model (MNPPM) which used the theoretical underpinning of Meehan's Careful nursing model (2003, 2012) was utilized as the nursing model. Variables related to scripted communication and patient satisfaction was studied. Patients who were admitted to the hospital and had inpatient status considered for the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) patient satisfaction survey. Inclusion criteria for the study population were if the patient was not a newborn, deceased, a ward of the state, or a No Publicity patient. The HCAHPS survey was only sent every 90 days per The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (CRMC, 2012). The purpose of the capstone project was to explore the efficacy of the ATAQ to assess for asthma control at each patient encounter. In addition, addressing asthma control at each care visit would improve asthma outcomes by implementing education that promotes asthma self-management. The goal of the capstone project was to improve asthma control assessment in the primary care setting and provide asthma education for children and the caregiver to improve asthma outcomes. The data analysis indicated asthma control improvement among subjects who received the asthma education intervention (p=0.011). In addition, there was a positive correlation with high ATAQ scores …
