Interoception is consciously interpreting and integrating bodily sensations. A person’s interoceptive awareness has a lasting effect as the mind and body attempt to maintain homeostasis. Time spent in nature offers greater stress reduction, cognitive functioning, and immune response. Both interoception and nature positively affect well-being, however, no studies describe interoceptive practice and time spent in nature as a combined experience. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of individuals engaging in a pre-recorded interoceptive practice six times, both in nature and non-nature settings. Eight participants describe their somatic, emotional, physiological, and overall essential experiences using descriptive journal worksheets with open-ended …

Spending time in nature results in health benefits. Researchers also find a positive relationship between spirituality and health. Some research suggests a positive association between nature connectedness and spirituality. The literature on the relationships between nature connectedness, spirituality, and well-being and the meaning these relationships have for individuals is limited. This phenomenological study describes 15 participants' lived experiences of how nature connectedness relates to spirituality and well-being. Five themes emerged using semi-structured interviews and thematic data analysis: Nature as a path to spirituality; nature preferences relate to spirituality; connectedness; spiritual guidance from nature; and spirituality in nature is healing. Nature …

The Human-Nature Relationship (HNR) is a complex, dynamic co-evolutionary relationship between humans and nature that governs human health and ecological sustainability. Demographic factors (e.g., age, gender) and personal perception (e.g., beliefs, thoughts, values) shape this relationship and subsequent human and ecological health; therefore, understanding the HNR for specific populations is imperative. We conducted a phenomenological inquiry into the lived experience of urban adolescent women (UAW) to describe their HNR, particularly with urban nature, through open-ended interviews with 10 urban female-identified persons aged 13- 18. We use Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and find that UAW express their HNR through three themes: …

Research demonstrates that spending time in nature restores, heals, and fosters connection in people. However, little is known regarding nature’s impact on the human spirit. The purpose of this phenomenological, mixed-method study is to describe nature’s impact on the human spirit. Twenty-six adults spent a minimum of fifteen minutes-a-day over a ten-day time period immersing themselves in nature and reflecting on a dimension of their spirit. Participants used photography and journaling to share reflections regarding how nature impacted their spirit. Six main spiritual themes emerged from thematic analysis: connection, vibrancy, awe/presence, joy, gratitude, and compassion. Of these six themes, the …
