Effects Of Dioscin On Dna Methyltransferase 1 Protein Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines, David Andrew Means
Effects Of Dioscin On Dna Methyltransferase 1 Protein Expression In Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines, David Andrew Means
Honors Theses
In previous experiments, the steroidal saponin, dioscin, which was extracted from the roots of the wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), was observed to have potent anti-proliferative effects on the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. Dioscin was also able to activate the transcription of tumor suppressor genes GATA3 and CDH1 in these cell lines. We hypothesize that the anti-proliferative effect of dioscin on human breast cancer cells could be mediated through the epigenome. Consequently, in order to explore this hypothesis, we have analyzed the expression of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) protein in these cells. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were …
Action Understanding Via Mirror Neuron Systems: A Proposed Model For The Science And Treatment Of Stuttering, Madison Jones
Action Understanding Via Mirror Neuron Systems: A Proposed Model For The Science And Treatment Of Stuttering, Madison Jones
Honors Theses
Persistent developmental stuttering is generally considered to be a speech disorder characterized by repetitions, prolongations and postural fixations, and is relatively resistant to therapy. While mainstream stuttering therapy continues to rely on behavioral speech targets, recent research suggests that mirror neuron systems can be activated to temporarily induce natural sounding fluent speech in those who stutter via exposure to second speech signals. Despite the prevalence of speech-motor based stuttering treatments, a unified account of how and why fluency is enhanced through endogenous methods remains elusive. The purpose of these two exploratory studies is to further test the validity of the …
Pituitary Gland Functional Connectivity And Bmi, E. Paige Rucker
Pituitary Gland Functional Connectivity And Bmi, E. Paige Rucker
Honors Theses
This study examined the link between pituitary gland functional connectivity and BMI. The pituitary gland plays various roles in the body through the secretion of hormones, but its direct role in development of obesity and BMI management is unknown. Resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rsfMRI) brain data of individuals with diverse BMIs were analyzed by voxel-wise analysis to determine the functional connectivities of the pituitary gland to other regions of the brain. A significant negative correlation was found between BMI and pituitary gland functional connectivity in eleven different brain regions. These regions include the posterior thalamus, lingual gyrus, precuneus, …

Intravenous Solution Wastage In Hospital Pharmacy At Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi (Oxford), Yujing Zhang
Honors Theses
Introduction: IV solution wastage refers to IV medications made for a patient that remain unused by that patient for a variety of reasons, and have subsequently expired, or for other reasons cannot be used for another patient (recycled), and therefore must be disposed of. This problem is widespread across hospital pharmacies in the U.S. and the world. BMH-NM (Oxford) pharmacy utilizes many waste reduction strategies but has never monitored its IV solution wastage. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the number of IV solutions wasted in a month and the subsequent financial loss in terms of drug …

Knowledge Of Epilepsy In Students Attending The University Of Mississippi Oxford Campus, Alyssa Reid
Honors Theses
Epilepsy is thought to be a very rare condition, and therefore many people do not know how to react or what to do when a person has a seizure. Epilepsy is in fact twice as common as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined. Furthermore, there is not a cure to stop the seizures for many people. Attending college is a challenging experience, but managing epilepsy while in college can be even more difficult. Hence it is important for all students to learn the basics of epilepsy and especially how to help a person having a seizure. …
