Computational Exploration Of Gerontology-Related Topics Shared On Social Media Platform Twitter, Victor P. Cornet Ms, Michin Hong Nov 2018

Computational Exploration Of Gerontology-Related Topics Shared On Social Media Platform Twitter, Victor P. Cornet Ms, Michin Hong

Health Services and Informatics Research

Twitter, a popular Internet social media platform, has become a significant medium for sharing information and ideas about various topics, including aging and older adults. While studies have been conducted to examine stigma or perception about specific diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and seizure on Twitter, there has been little effort to identify general themes of Twitter posts related to aging and older adults. This exploratory study attempts to answer this need by conducting a topic analysis of posts shared on Twitter posts about aging and older adults in English. We collected 328,568 English posts from Twitter posted between 07/01/18 …

Technoference: Longitudinal Associations Between Parent Technology Use, Parenting Stress, And Child Behavior Problems., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jenny S Radesky Aug 2018

Technoference: Longitudinal Associations Between Parent Technology Use, Parenting Stress, And Child Behavior Problems., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jenny S Radesky

Health Services and Informatics Research

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Heavy parent digital technology use has been associated with suboptimal parent-child interactions and internalizing/externalizing child behavior, but directionality of associations is unclear. This study aims to investigate longitudinal bidirectional associations between parent technology use and child behavior, and understand whether this is mediated by parenting stress.

METHODS: Participants included 183 couples with a young child (age 0-5 years, mean = 3.0 years) who completed surveys at baseline, 1, 3 and 6 months. Cross-lagged structural equation models of parent technology interference during parent-child activities, parenting stress, and child externalizing and internalizing behavior were tested.

RESULTS: Controlling for potential …

Adult Experts' Perceptions Of Telemental Health For Youth: A Delphi Study., Abigail Howard, Mindy Flanagan, Michelle Drouin, Maria D. Carpenter, Elizabeth Chen, Catherine Duchovic, Tammy Toscos Jul 2018

Adult Experts' Perceptions Of Telemental Health For Youth: A Delphi Study., Abigail Howard, Mindy Flanagan, Michelle Drouin, Maria D. Carpenter, Elizabeth Chen, Catherine Duchovic, Tammy Toscos

Health Services and Informatics Research

OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to measure experts' opinions and develop consensus via the Delphi process on the barriers, applications, and concerns associated with telemental health (TMH) for youth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We delivered 3 online surveys over 2 months in Summer, 2016-2025 adult experts, including adults who experienced youth depression or suicidality, parents of youth with lived experience, and professionals (ie youth mental health researchers, clinicians/staff, or educators). We used the Delphi method to construct Likert and open-ended questions, developing expert consensus over 3 iterative surveys on the barriers and benefits of TMH for youth.

RESULTS: Adult experts identified stigma …

"Technoference" And Implications For Mothers' And Fathers' Couple And Coparenting Relationship Quality., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Adam M Galovan, Jaclyn D Cravens, Michelle Drouin Mar 2018

"Technoference" And Implications For Mothers' And Fathers' Couple And Coparenting Relationship Quality., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Adam M Galovan, Jaclyn D Cravens, Michelle Drouin

Health Services and Informatics Research

Technology devices are widely used today, creating opportunities to connect and communicate with distant others while also potentially disrupting communication and interactions between those who are physically present (i.e., technoference or phubbing). These disruptions in couple and coparenting relationships have the potential to negatively impact relationship outcomes. In this two-part study of 182 married/cohabiting couples from the Daily Family Life Project and 239 couples from the Couple Well-Being Project, we examined the role of technoference in couple and coparenting relationship quality and potential gender differences utilizing dyadic data. We found that greater technoference related to greater conflict over technology …

Technoference: Parent Distraction With Technology And Associations With Child Behavior Problems., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jenny S Radesky Jan 2018

Technoference: Parent Distraction With Technology And Associations With Child Behavior Problems., Brandon T. Mcdaniel Phd, Jenny S Radesky

Health Services and Informatics Research

Heavy parent digital technology use has been associated with suboptimal parent-child interactions, but no studies examine associations with child behavior. This study investigates whether parental problematic technology use is associated with technology-based interruptions in parent-child interactions, termed "technoference," and whether technoference is associated with child behavior problems. Parent reports from 170 U.S. families (child age = 3.04 years) and actor-partner interdependence modeling showed that maternal and paternal problematic digital technology use predicted greater technoference in mother-child and father-child interactions; then, maternal technoference predicted both mothers' and fathers' reports of child externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Results suggest that technological interruptions are …

Maintaining Relationship Alternatives Electronically: Positive Relationship Maintenance In Back Burner Relationships, Jayson L. Dibble, Narissra M. Punyanunt-Carter, Michelle Drouin Jan 2018

Maintaining Relationship Alternatives Electronically: Positive Relationship Maintenance In Back Burner Relationships, Jayson L. Dibble, Narissra M. Punyanunt-Carter, Michelle Drouin

Health Services and Informatics Research

Back burners are desired prospective romantic/sexual partners that people communicate with to establish a future romantic or sexual relationship. We surveyed 658 college students about the extent to which they reported using various positive relationship maintenance strategies (positivity, openness, assurances) during communication with their most important back burner. Consistent with previous research, singles did not differ from those in committed romances in the number of back burners reported; however, singles and casual daters utilized the positive maintenance strategies to a greater extent than did those in committed relationships. Men reported using more assurances than did women, but the sexes did …

Systematic Review Of Smartphone-Based Passive Sensing For Health And Wellbeing., Victor P. Cornet Ms, Richard J. Holden Jan 2018

Systematic Review Of Smartphone-Based Passive Sensing For Health And Wellbeing., Victor P. Cornet Ms, Richard J. Holden

Health Services and Informatics Research

OBJECTIVE: To review published empirical literature on the use of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review of the English language literature was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Papers indexed in computing, technology, and medical databases were included if they were empirical, focused on health and/or wellbeing, involved the collection of data via smartphones, and described the utilized technology as passive or requiring minimal user interaction.

RESULTS: Thirty-five papers were included in the review. Studies were performed around the world, with samples of up to 171 (median n = 15) representing individuals with bipolar disorder, …
