Sustainability Of An Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship Program, Kristin Smith Nov 2020

Sustainability Of An Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship Program, Kristin Smith

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: Antibiotic stewardship is an effort to evaluate and improve the use of antibiotics by providers and patients. Antibiotic stewardship programs (ASPs) promote the appropriate use of antibiotics. There is increasing evidence that supports the use of antibiotic stewardship programs in reducing antibiotic prescribing rates while continuing to maintain safe patient care. Research supports approaches with multiple interventions and ongoing commitment to antibiotic stewardship. However, information regarding long-term sustainability of antibiotic stewardship programs is lacking. The purpose of this quality assurance project was to assess long-term sustainability of a previously implemented ASP promoting appropriate prescribing of antibiotics for the …

Evaluation Of Mcgeer Criteria For Uti Determination In A Nursing Home, Julie Rehagen Jul 2020

Evaluation Of Mcgeer Criteria For Uti Determination In A Nursing Home, Julie Rehagen

Dissertations

Problem: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most complex and challenging medical diagnoses to make in the long-term care (LTC) population. The unnecessary treatment of a UTI can increase cost of care and the likelihood of multi-drug resistant organisms.

Methods: The McGeer criteria which focuses on UTI in the LTC population was utilized to complete a quality improvement initiative. A descriptive cohort project utilizing retrospective and prospective data was completed to determine if an implemented McGeer criteria protocol improved the avoidable treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB).

Results: Before implementation of the protocol, 62.5% of residents were unnecessarily treated …

Implementing The Cdcs Core Elements Of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship Program Into The Urgent Care, Deanna Powelson Jul 2018

Implementing The Cdcs Core Elements Of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship Program Into The Urgent Care, Deanna Powelson

Dissertations

Purpose: The inappropriate use of antibiotics has led to the development of antimicrobial

resistance which is a severe threat to the public and an increasing global problem. The

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates at least two million illnesses

and 23,000 deaths are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the United States (CDC,

2014). The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the

effectiveness of an antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) on urgent care providers'

prescribing on viral respiratory tract infections (RTIs) including the common cold,

pharyngitis, and bronchitis.

Methods: This QI project implemented the CDCs Core …
