Background: There is very little information about the quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors in LMIC countries with underdeveloped non communicable health infrastructures, who bear two thirds of the global stroke burden.

Methodology: We used a sequential mix methods approach. First, a quantitative analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 700 participants, who constituted 350 stroke survivor and their caregiver dyads. QOL of stroke survivor was assessed via Stroke Specific Quality of Life Scale (SSQOLS) whereas QOL of caregivers was assessed through RAND-36. In addition; we assessed complications, psychosocial and functional disability of stroke survivors. Following this quantitative survey, …

Background

The relationships between underweight status, platelet reactivity, and clinical outcomes after PCI with DES are not well understood.

Methods

ADAPT-DES was a prospective, multicenter study of 8582 pts treated with aspirin and clopidogrel in whom routine measurement of P2Y12 reaction units (PRU) by VerifyNow testing was performed following successful DES implantation. Pts were classified according to the following body mass index (BMI) groups: Underweight (BMI/m2), normal weight (20 kg/m2 ≤ BMI/m2), overweight (25 kg/m2 ≤ BMI/m2), and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2).

Results

Underweight pts were more often female, smokers, had higher rates of peripheral arterial disease and renal insufficiency, …

The subject of nutrition in intensive care is broad.Thenutrition support therapy plays a crucial role in the management of critically ill patients. This review was carried out to address the existing controversies and to recognise the current practice guidelines for the management of nutrition in intensive care units (ICUs) in adults. A PubMed search was carried out for clinical trials addressing the current nutrition practice in ICUs, recommendations for calculating energy requirements and efficacy of an algorithmic approach to nutritional delivery in an ICU setting. Algorithms were developed and modified for the practice of nutrition in an adult ICU in …

Glucose Monitoring In Pregnancy Complicated By Diabetes., Aisha Sheikh, Abdul Jabbar Sep 2016

Glucose Monitoring In Pregnancy Complicated By Diabetes., Aisha Sheikh, Abdul Jabbar

Department of Medicine

Diabetes in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Due to variations in insulin resistance throughout pregnancy there is a continuous need to implement Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), exercise and pharmacological treatments which have to be escalated. Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is integral to the management of diabetes in pregnancy. Proper implementation of SMBG in pregnant women with diabetes requires patient education and understanding of its applications and limitations. Real-time results enable individuals to make informed daily self-care decisions regarding diet, exercise, and insulin. Retrospective analysis of SMBG data enables clinicians to develop individualized care plans, informing …
