Use Of Fiberoptic Intubation Simulation To Enhance Skill And Confidence Among Anesthesia Providers, Kris Toribio

Background The purpose of this study was to describe the usefulness of a video-recorded low-fidelity Fiber Optic (FO) intubation simulation and its effect on anesthesia providers’ confidence and skill in performing FO intubation. Method The study was conducted during the 2019 IANA Airway Workshop using a post-test only study design. All participants who volunteered to participate in the simulation were asked to watch a video-recorded instruction on FO intubation. Immediately after viewing the video, the participants completed a hands-on simulation while the researchers recorded their FO intubation times. Congenital heart disease is a prevalent health issue in patients around the world. Approximately 8 in 1,000 live births are complicated by congenital heart disease (Ndile & Kohi, 2011). Increased levels of stress and anxiety have been reported by parents of children with congenital heart disease throughout the process of cardiac surgery, hospitalization, and especially discharge home (Brown & Smith, 2018). Background/Significance: Video-based learning is a growing method being utilized to train nurse anesthesia trainees (NATs) in crisis management, such as a venous gas embolism (VGE). Use of this educational modality may improve crisis management skills, competence, and confidence in the NAT. Therefore, a video-based left ventricular assist device (LVAD) program was developed to address an identified knowledge gap for the NorthShore University HealthSystem (NSUHS) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNA). Stress is the body’s way of responding to something out of the norm, or a stressor. Stressors affect nurse anesthesia trainees (NATs) to unpredictable levels of stress. The purpose of this study was to explore stressors experienced; ways to cope with stressors as perceived by NATs, if there was any association between socio-demographic variables to the various ways of coping with stress, and development of a one-hour seminar on different ways to cope with stress during a nurse anesthesia program.

There is a growing body of evidence that reveals mounting need for radical modification of college health services for young adults in the United States. The health issues for this population, which are exacerbated by inadequate access to healthcare include alcoholism, depression, unintended pregnancy, disordered eating, sexual assault and sexually transmitted infections. Utilizing the College Student Health Survey developed by University of Minnesota’s Boynton Health Service, this study specifically focused on analyzing the health care needs of undergraduate students at a large, urban, university.
