Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses’ perceptions of the NNP role and barriers to entering the role.
Background: A shortage of neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) exists. Hiring NNPs from outside the current NICU staff has resulted in turnover and additional cost. If current nursing staff prepared as NNPs, the organization would benefit; yet few nurses have done so. Reasons that dissuade nurses from pursuing the NNP role have not been adequately examined. Knowing how nurses perceive the NNP role may help to decrease barriers and inform plans to address the problem.

*Hospitals and healthcare professionals are increasingly being held accountable to create systems of care that address this issue with every patient encounter.
*AHRQ talks about implementing Universal Literacy Precautions.

Background/ Rationale: It has been established that Interprofessional Education (IPE) offers a solution to foster teamwork and improve patient care and should be implemented early in professional role development. Thomas Jefferson University has been providing IPE to interprofessional healthcare students for over 5 years. A long term strategic goal was identified to “create innovative learning environments that support interprofessional education including state-of-the-art technologies”. In actualizing this goal, the curriculum was enhanced with technology supported collaborative learning techniques to assist in group processing and reflection. Combining traditional IPE activities with technology supported components incorporated the advantages of both delivery methods, …

Establishing a sense of community builds relationships among nursing students, assists in developing a comfort level with online course technology, is conducive to learning, and encourages reflection on learning possibilities. It has been established that online threaded discussions can encourage the growth of a learning …
