Caregiver-Implemented Naturalistic Communication Interventions: Characterizing Chosen Home Routines, Bianca Garza, Camille Quaife May 2020

Caregiver-Implemented Naturalistic Communication Interventions: Characterizing Chosen Home Routines, Bianca Garza, Camille Quaife

Scholars Week

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help individuals across the lifespan improve their communication skills. SLPs who specialize in early intervention work with families of children birth to three years old with communication delays. Language therapy is mandated to be family centered and to promote child development within natural, everyday activities. Research in early language intervention supports embedding language learning into natural routines such as shared book reading and play, but little is known about families’ preferences and child outcomes related to other home routines. In this study, videos of home routines from 34 families of toddlers with communication delays were collected before …

Myths And Misconceptions Of Alternative And Augmentative Communication, Hannah Burch

Scholars Week

Myths and Misconceptions of Alternative and Augmentative Communication Student: Hannah Burch Faculty Advisor: Jennifer Thistle, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Abstract This project addressed the question “What myths and misconceptions about alternative and augmentative communication do graduate speech-language pathology and undergraduate special education students hold?” Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) is any form of nonverbal communication that is used to enhance or replace speech (Beukelman & Mirenda, 2013). AAC is used by individuals of all ages, including children with developmental disorders and adults who have acquired disabilities. Feasibility Of Psychoacoustic Testing On Hearing-Impaired Individuals With A Portable Device, S. Adelaide Bock May 2020

Feasibility Of Psychoacoustic Testing On Hearing-Impaired Individuals With A Portable Device, S. Adelaide Bock

Scholars Week

This study tested the viability of Portable Automated Rapid Testing (PART) to the screening of complex auditory processing ability in clinical populations. Previously, this had been accomplished for a large dataset of normal hearing listeners. (Lelo de Larrea-Mancera et al., 2020). PART allows researchers to conduct psychoacoustical testing on consumer tablets. Two groups of participants were recruited: nine young normal-hearing individuals (NH) and eight mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing-impaired (HI) individuals. Each participant completed a battery of psychoacoustic tests assessed using PART administered on an iPad. Data were recorded and analyzed to evaluate group differences. Results showed significant differences for the 2 …

Family Experiences Related To Early Hearing Intervention Guidelines In Washington State, Rachel Tennant, Douglas P. Sladen May 2018

Family Experiences Related To Early Hearing Intervention Guidelines In Washington State, Rachel Tennant, Douglas P. Sladen

Scholars Week

Undiagnosed hearing loss can have an especially devastating effect on young children. Without proper assessment, a child may have limited access to language and auditory input, and their speech and language skills may be negatively impacted. Research has shown that early intervention is related to positive developmental outcomes in children with hearing loss. Therefore, it is beneficial for these children and their families to receive support as early as possible. The present study has two main goals. Firstly, this study seeks to examine the implementation of three major national goals of early hearing intervention in Washington State, focusing primarily on …

Survey Of Professional Education Background In Guatemalan Speech-Language Pathologists, Anna Gregovich May 2016

Survey Of Professional Education Background In Guatemalan Speech-Language Pathologists, Anna Gregovich

Scholars Week

The purpose of this research is to gain insight into the educational background of Guatemalan Speech-Language Pathologists—or those who provide speech and language services. Guatemala has a scarcity of professional training and services surrounding the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Therefore, there is an unmet need for trained professionals to provide speech and language services. A survey was developed and distributed to professionals who provide speech and language services at Brillo de Sol, a school that provides individualized education and rehabilitation to students who would may not normally have the chance to receive an education. This project has been designed as …

The Effect Of A Five-Week Exercise Intervention Using Emg Biofeedback On Scapular Stabilizer Muscle Activation And Scapular Kinematics., Samantha Gunderson

Scholars Week

This study investigated the effects of a five-week EMG biofeedback intervention on scapular stabilizer muscle activation, and scapular kinematics, in a healthy population. Twenty subjects participated in the study (n = 10 exercise with biofeedback, n = 10 exercise only). Both groups participated in exercises targeted at activating the serratus anterior and lower trapezius muscles three days a week for five weeks. The exercise with biofeedback group completed a biofeedback session once a week. All subjects were tested at baseline, week 6, and week 8 for muscle activation of the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (UT), and serratus anterior (SA), …
