© 2020, The Author(s). Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a prevalent noninflammatory spondyloarthropathy characterized by ectopic mineral formation along the anterolateral aspect of the vertebral column, yet little is known about its underlying pathogenesis. Our objective was to evaluate the histopathological features and composition of ectopic mineral within spinal tissues affected by DISH in humans. Thoracic spine segments from six embalmed cadaveric donors (one female and five males; median age 82 years) meeting the radiographic diagnostic criteria for DISH were evaluated using radiological, histological, and physical analyses. Overall, the histological features of ectopic mineralization at individual motion segments were …

© 2020, The Author(s). Background: The Revised Short McGill Pain Questionnaire Version-2 (SF-MPQ-2) is a multidimensional outcome measure designed to capture, evaluate and discriminate pain from neuropathic and non-neuropathic sources. A recent systematic review found insufficient psychometric data with respect to musculoskeletal (MSK) health conditions. This study aimed to describe the reproducibility (test–retest reliability and agreement) and internal consistency of the SF-MPQ-2 for use among patients with musculoskeletal shoulder pain. Methods: Eligible patients with shoulder pain from MSK sources completed the SF-MPQ-2: at baseline (n = 195), and a subset did so again after 3–7 days (n = 48), if …

© 2020, The Author(s). Background: Accurate diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is essential for directing appropriate treatment; and for making decisions about work injury claims. The Kamath and Stothard Questionnaire (KSQ) is a self-reported tool used for the diagnosis of CTS. Comprehensibility and comprehensiveness of this questionnaire are critical to diagnostic performance and need to be established. The purpose of the study was to describe how potential respondents, clinicians, and measurement researchers interpret KSQ questions in order to identify and resolve potential sources of misclassification. Methods: Hand therapists, measurement researchers, participants with CTS, and a control group were interviewed …

A Protocol For A Randomized Controlled Trial Investigating The Safety And Cost-Effectiveness Of Outpatient Total Hip Arthroplasty, Bryn O. Zomar, Jacquelyn D. Marsh, Brent A. Lanting, Dianne M. Bryant

Bone and Joint Institute

© 2020 The Author(s). Background: A significant proportion of the overall cost of total hip arthroplasty (THA) results from the inpatient hospital stay following the procedure. Considering the substantial and increasing number of these procedures performed annually, shifting to an outpatient model of care where the patient is discharged home the same day as their surgery represents a potential for significant cost savings. The potential significant impact of an outpatient care model on constrained healthcare budgets and lack of high-quality evidence regarding its effectiveness warrants a rigorous comparative trial. The purpose of this prospective, randomized controlled trial is to evaluate …

© 2020 by the authors. Assuming a symmetric pattern plays a fundamental role in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of facial asymmetry, for reconstructive craniofacial surgery, knowing the precise location of the facial midline is important since for most reconstructive procedures the intact side of the face serves as a template for the malformed side. However, the location of the midline is still a subjective procedure, despite its importance. This study aimed to automatically locate the bilateral symmetry midline of the facial skeleton based on an invariant moment technique using pseudo-Zernike moments. A total of 367 skull images were evaluated …

The Architectural Evolution Of Self-Immolative Polymers, Quinton E.A. Sirianni, Elizabeth R. Gillies

Bone and Joint Institute

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) depolymerize to small molecules through a cascade of reactions following cleavage of the polymer backbone or a specific terminal or focal point moiety by a stimulus. They have been developed using the principles of self-immolative spacers and low ceiling temperature (Tc) polymers. Key developments over the past couple of decades have been the polymerization of spacers to enable long reaction cascades, and the introduction of stimuli-responsive end-caps which have allowed depolymerization to be triggered in a controlled manner in response to a wide array of stimuli. This review will focus on the architectural …

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd Hydrogels are of significant interest for cell encapsulation and delivery in regenerative medicine. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) are a class of biodegradable polymers that exhibit promise for biomedical applications due to the degradability of the ester and amide linkages in their backbones, their preparation from biomolecules such as amino acids, and the ability to readily tune their properties through a modular synthesis approach. Water-soluble PEAs containing cationic arginine moieties have previously been developed, but to the best of our knowledge, neutral water-soluble PEAs based on non-charged amino acids have not been reported. Using a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based …

Modified versions were proposed as solutions to measurement deficits in the NDI. However, the original 10-item NDI was scored out of 50 and is still the most frequently administered version. Examining the extent of agreement between traditional and Rasch-based versions using Bland-Altman (B&A) plots will inform our understanding of score differences that might rise from using different versions. Therefore, the objective of current study was to describe the extent of agreement between different …

We retrospectively reviewed post-operative valgus stress radiographs in 23 multiligament injured patients who underwent concurrent sMCL and cruciate ligament reconstruction by a single surgeon. Post- operatively, 23 patients underwent valgus stress radiographs that were assessed at a mean of 8.7 months (range: 4-13 months), and mean SSD was 0.64mm ± 0.42mm. Eight patients underwent both pre- and post-operative valgus stress radiographs. Post-operative (0.09mm ± 0.63mm) SSD was found to be significantly reduced compared to pre-operative (2.07mm ± 0.44mm) SSD (mean diff. …
