The Targeted Antioxidant, Catalase-Skl, Protects Against Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity In Hei-Oc1 Cells, Tiffany Ni Jan 2018

The Targeted Antioxidant, Catalase-Skl, Protects Against Cisplatin-Induced Ototoxicity In Hei-Oc1 Cells, Tiffany Ni

2018 Undergraduate Awards

Hearing loss is the fastest growing and one of the most prevalent chronic health conditions in the world. Cisplatin, a drug widely used in the treatment of many cancers, has been shown to be particularly damaging to the inner ear, causing ototoxicity in 70-100% of patients treated. Previous studies demonstrated the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in hair cells as a major contributor to hair cell death in response to ototoxic drugs, noise exposure, and age-related hearing loss. The antioxidant enzyme catalase, predominantly localized in the peroxisome of cells, plays a crucial role in regulating cellular oxidative stress by …

Analyzing Genetic Variants Related To 5-Fu And Capecitabine Toxicity, Justin Kritzinger Jan 2018

Analyzing Genetic Variants Related To 5-Fu And Capecitabine Toxicity, Justin Kritzinger

Chemotherapy regimens containing 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or the oral pro-drug capecitabine are often used to treat colorectal cancer patients. Unfortunately, toxicity resulting from inappropriate dosing occurs in approximately 33% of patients. Currently, select polymorphisms in the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) gene (DPYD) are used to predict the occurrence of toxicity and to guide dose reductions. As a vital enzyme involved in the metabolism of 5-FU to inactive metabolites, DPD has been the focus of studies related to 5-FU toxicity. However, patients lacking these variants still experience toxic reactions to fluoropyrimidine treatments. Here, we examined variants in 12 genes within the metabolic pathway …

Immigrant Mental Health In Canada, Fariha Jamani Jan 2018

Immigrant Mental Health In Canada, Fariha Jamani

2018 Undergraduate Awards

Canada is globally renowned as a nation of newcomers. Every year, around 200,000 immigrants make Canada their new home. As the share of immigrants continues to rise, understanding their systemic health transitions within the country becomes that much more crucial. Immigrant health status and wellbeing is currently discerned as a pressing public health concern. Analysis on immigrant health is critical in not only developing population specific healthcare policies, but also in building viable and resilient communities within Canada. Nonetheless, Canadian immigrants continue to have compromised physical and mental health levels; this reciprocally impacts their quality of life, self-perception and productivity. …
