Understanding Health Needs In Rural Communities To Lead To Optimal Intervention, Minte J. Dye, Claire C. Baetge, Katelyn Murphy, Mikayla Cole, Miquela Smith, Megan Mcclendon, Mark D. Faries

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Increased autonomy can lead to better health behaviors and outcomes in rural communities, through improved motivation, supporting personal choice in health decisions, and maintaining trust in community-focused responses. However, public health initiatives often require rigorous, time-consuming methodologies, thus limiting timely assessment of health-related needs and concern and hindering autonomy support and educational program/resource response—particularly when urgency is required. PURPOSE: To evaluate a novel, brief qualitative assessment of immediate needs in rural communities across Texas. This project was a part of a program and resource development phase of a statewide project, Community Conversations on Health, in partnership with the …

Bioactivity And Structural Properties Of Hydroxyapatite On Ti6a|4v And Si(100) Surfaces By Pulsed Laser Deposition, Salizhan Kylchbekov

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although biomedical implant technology is very advanced, there are still caveats in terms of biocompatibility properties because metals are inert to biological processes such as osseointegration, cell growth, and cell adhesion. This results in statistically significant complications and opens rooms for improvements. Among many techniques to improve this problem, coating the metal surface with biologically functional materials has resulted in the best performances. Hydroxyapatite (HAP), Ca₁₀(PO)(OH), is the most stable form of calcium phosphates in human body environment and is functional in key processes such as ion exchange, osteoblast (bone cells) formation, …

Mental Health Stigma In College Students By Academic Major, Kristen Miller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Stigma is best defined as the disapproval and shame felt by people who display characteristics not widely accepted in society. Although mental illness has become more prevalent in society through advocacy and awareness campaigns, it fails to be accepted and often individuals may feel shame that prevents them from seeking help (Dyrbye, Eacker, Durning, Brazeau, Moutier, Massie, S., et al, 2015; Givens & Tjia, 2002). Physicians in particular have been shown to have decreased help-seeking behaviors for psychological issues due to fear of professional repercussions (Dyrbye et al., 2015). Physicians also show increased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and elevated …

Assessment Of Ergonomics In Indian Dental Practice: A Workplace Analysis, Divya Gadde Apr 2018

Assessment Of Ergonomics In Indian Dental Practice: A Workplace Analysis, Divya Gadde

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Dental practice requires unique working conditions such as prolonged working hours, strained body postures and laborious, high finesse dental techniques. However, it can be more efficiently performed by the application of ergonomics, rather than physically forcing the worker's body to fit the job. Posture is highly influenced by factors such as inadequate working level, incorrect patient positioning, and poor visual comfort. In order to eliminate musculoskeletal disorders it is necessary to control these and other factors, and design the human work environment to be more ergonomic. The aim of this study was to assess ergonomics within Indian dental practice and …

Healthcare And Its Impact On Nurses: The United States Vs. The United Kingdom, Alexandria Colovos

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Currently, in the United States, the topic of healthcare reform is in the back of everyone’s mind. What will come of our healthcare system? Will the cost of healthcare decrease? Will patients have better access to care? With this Capstone Experience/Thesis, I wanted to explore the differences between the current healthcare system that we have in the United States, to the nearly seventy-year-old National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, which provides healthcare to all. The NHS is free at the point of care and is funded by taxation. To understand if such a system would work in the …

More specifically, one of the burdens experienced by individuals is the monetary burden of affording the necessary health services to properly manage their illness.

This study attempts to reveal a difference between mental health symptom count for individuals who do and do not experience difficulty affording health care for their physical problems. The first …
