Purine And Pyrimidine Monophosphate Vs Polyphosphate Homeostasis In Human Retinal Endothelial Cells, Andrew Gregory, Jenna Hart, Thangal Yumnamcha, Mohamed Shawky, Shaimaa El Tanani, Ahmed Ibrahim

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: A major cause of blindness is proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and there is limited data on the nucleic acid (NA) profiles in PDR. We characterized the profiles of NAs in human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs) subjected to high glucose (HG) and hypoxia (Hyp) - common risk factors associated with PDR.

Methods: HRECs were treated with osmotic control (Mannitol, 25 mM) or high glucose (HG, 25 mM) for 5 days, followed by normoxia or hypoxia (Hyp, 2% O2) for 24 hours. Pathway enrichment analysis from the significant metabolites in the Hyp+HG vs control comparison was subsequently performed.

Results: The precursors …

Understanding Diabetes Through Pathway Analysis Evaluation, London Cavaletto

Research Opportunities for Engineering Undergraduates (ROEU) Program 2018-19

Metabolic disorders affect many people and identifying significantly perturbed biological processes in a metabolic disease can provide valuable insight into the disease’s mechanisms. Evaluating the proposed Metabolic Pathway Analysis Method (RAMP) will enable us to reliably use it to identify significantly perturbed metabolic pathways that could help identify disease mechanisms and potential therapy targets or disease bio-markers of a metabolic disorder.

Abstract

Background

Diabetes mellitus increases the rate of vaginal colonization and infection with Candida species

Methods

We surveyed women with diabetes receiving care at either an urban or suburban diabetes clinic to examine the relationship between vaginal Candida colonization, diabetes type and duration, and HbA1c level. 101 participants completed the self-administered questionnaire and self-collected a vaginal swab for Candida culture. Candida colonization was similar by age and race.

Results

Type 1 diabetics were three times as likely as type 2 diabetics to be colonized with any Candida species (OR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.03, 11.41; p = 0.04); even …
