Differentiating Axonal From Demyelinating Neuropathies Using Multiparametric Quantitative Mri Of Peripheral Nerves, Jacob D. Baraz, Stephanie Xuan, Sadaf Saba, Xue Yang, Ryan Castoro, Yang Xuan, Alison Roth, Richard D. Dortch, Jun Li, Yongsheng Chen

Medical Student Research Symposium

Objectives: To develop a multiparametric quantitative MRI (qMRI) method to track pathological changes in the peripheral neuropathies.

Background: Irrespective of the causes or types of polyneuropathies, peripheral nerves are mainly afflicted by two kinds of pathologies – axonal loss and demyelination. It is critical to differentiate between the two as treatments are different for the two conditions. While nerve conduction studies (NCS) have been used to differentiate the two pathologies in the distal nerves, there are no tools to probe the pathologies in the proximal peripheral nerves. This is particularly needed when distal nerves become non-responsive in NCS.

Methods: We …

Benzene Metabolite, Hydroquinone, Activates The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Pathway In Trophoblasts, Darby P. Richards, Anthony Maxwell, Laura Stephan, Jiahui Ding, Gil Mor

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Benzene is the 6th most produced chemical in the world and a major pollutant that has been shown to have adverse effects on pregnancy. We previously showed that maternal benzene exposure during pregnancy induces maternal immune activation and also leads to an increase in fetal reabsorptions. The molecular mechanism in which benzene induces these negative effects is poorly understood. Here we developed a cellular model of benzene exposure to understand the molecular effect of benzene on trophoblast cells. Specifically, cells were exposed hydroquinone, a major benzene metabolite, in order to determine the molecular mechanism behind the observed maternal immune …

The Relationship Among Depression, Motivational Factors, And Diabetes Management In Emerging Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Sahar Elmenini, April Idalski Carcone, Deborah Ellis

Medical Student Research Symposium

Self-determination theory (SDT) posits intrinsic motivation arises from fulfilling three psychological needs – autonomy, self-efficacy, and relatedness. SDT is useful for understanding the challenges emerging adults (EA, age 18-30) living with a chronic illness, like type 1 diabetes (T1D), face including developing independence, autonomy and new relationships while parental support and involvement decrease. This places EAs at risk for sub-optimal health. Depression can further decrease motivation. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that depressive symptoms are associated with motivation (autonomy and self-efficacy) which are associated with diabetes management (DM) in EAs with T1D. Participants (N=52) were …

Relative Contribution Of Different Upper Glycolytic Components In The Maintenance Of The Retinal Vascular Endothelial Cell Barrier, Nicole B. Oska, Ahmed S. Ibrahim, Mohamed Shawky, Diego Galarza Ramirez, Shaimaa Eltanani

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Damage to the retinal vascular endothelium is implicated in the progression of retinal degenerative diseases, including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). The retinal endothelial cells constitute the inner blood-retinal barrier (iBRB), and disruption of this barrier allows for the dysregulation of fluid and solute passage into the retina. Moreover, under normal physiological conditions, glycolytic metabolism is critical to the functioning of endothelial cells and maintenance of the iBRB. Conversely, in hyperglycemic environments, unregulated glycolytic metabolism leads to a buildup of glycolytic intermediates, which is thought to contribute to disruption of the iBRB and is associated with …

Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) in 2018 formed Learning Communities (LCs), that facilitate student engagement, comradery, and mentoring. These programs include medical student-premed, near-peer, and faculty/attending mentorships. There has been an identified gap in mentorship between near-peer and faculty/attending mentorship, and that is near-peer mentors at WSUSOM have yet to complete the residency process to guide other students through it. Moreover, faculty/attending mentors are more removed from residency and may not have relevant advice for students. As resident physicians are recent graduates, they are more likely to provide relevant insight about residency applications, academic challenges, and efficiency than …

Synergies Between Lactic And Acetic Acids In The Inhibition And Killing Of Strains Of Candida, Andrea Prenkocevic, Robert A. Akins

Medical Student Research Symposium

The most common vaginal diseases are bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vaginal candidiasis (VC), experienced by 29% and 75% of women, respectively. BV is characterized by a depletion of vaginal Lactobacillus species, displaced by dozens of BV-associated species; VC results from high abundance of Candida albicans or C. glabrata. It is not clear whether vaginal colonization or symptomatic infection by Candida is influenced by the vaginal microbiome and whether BV increases risk for VVC. Whether intravaginal Candida can flourish may depend on the major acids produced by Lactobacillus (lactate) versus non-Lactobacillus species in BV (acetate). The BV environment is typically pH …

Longitudinal associations between dietary fructose and sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure among US Black and White adults in the CARDIA study

Authors: Rana Elhamzawy, Daniel Domin, Dragana Komnenov

Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Likewise, suboptimal dietary habits, including high fructose and sodium intake, are major contributors to mortality. High dietary fructose alone predisposes to salt-sensitivity of blood pressure, which is an independent, significant cardiovascular risk factor. We previously showed in our rat model of fructose-salt-sensitive hypertension that even a short term (4 weeks) feeding with 20% fructose and 4% …
