I am going to speak mainly about extracorporeal hemodialysis, that is, dialysis conducted with an artificial kidney as opposed to peritoneal dialysis. The successful application of chronic dialysis and/or renal transplantation to patients with chronic uremia has sometimes obscured the fact that significant progress has also been made in our understanding of other therapeutic approaches to chronic renal failure. These less dramatic advances are commonly labeled "conservative" in nature, yet they have contributed decisively to the welfare of many uremic patients by improving their sense of wellbeing and delaying their need for such types of therapy as regularly repetitive dialysis.
