The Effect Of A Three Set Tennis Match On Knee Kinematics And Leg Muscle Activation During The Tennis Serve, Brad Fenter

Health and Kinesiology Theses

Tennis matches can be long, physically challenging affairs. Matches are often determined by the serving proficiency of the players. The serve has been extensively studied, but the relationship between the serve and match length regarding knee kinematics and leg muscle activation is not well documented in a real time environment. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect a three-set tennis match had on knee kinematics and muscle activation of quadriceps and hamstrings during the serve. Ten male collegiate tennis players (age: 19.6±1.7) were recruited from The University of Texas at Tyler. All participants played a three-set …

Vulnerability And Adaptation For Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Amy Johnson Dec 2012

Vulnerability And Adaptation For Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Amy Johnson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Many of the over 5 million survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with related disabilities living in the community do not have support for their unmet needs. Adapting to life after TBI is difficult because of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral complications. Nurses and other healthcare professionals have the opportunity to promote positive outcomes for persons with TBI. However, to increase the depth and breadth of that support, nurses need a base of knowledge that includes an understanding of the TBI survivors' needs, vulnerabilities, and obstacles to adaptation. TBIs result in physical, psychological, developmental, and emotional losses. The needs that ensue …

The Nature And Meaning Of Insulin Pump Use In Emerging Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Donna G. Hood

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adults (ages 18-25) with type 1 diabetes are a vulnerable population as they transition from the family home and their pediatric healthcare providers and deal with multiple competing demands. There is very little literature addressing those in this developmental group who use insulin pump technology for diabetes self-management. Listening to the voices of emerging adults who use insulin pump technology will increase our understanding of their experience and will give health care providers the opportunity to develop evidence based practice based on their lived experiences. The qualitative research, using the hermeneutic phenomenological approach described by Max van Manen, provides …

Research reporting positive impact of parent-adolescent sex communication on influencing risky behaviors has rarely included parents of African American adolescent males. A systematic review of the literature examining health literacy in African Americans supported the importance of including non-print sources of information for this population. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of …

The Use Of Positive Deviance To Deliver Patient-Centered Care, Jodie Gary May 2012

The Use Of Positive Deviance To Deliver Patient-Centered Care, Jodie Gary

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

What happens when critical care nurses find themselves in situations where patient care needs are not covered by practice guidelines or standard orders or when the needs conflict with those guidelines and orders? Sometimes usual practices such as call the supervisor, call the physician, or follow the protocol just do not meet the needs of the patient at the exact time and place. Experienced critical care nurses often discuss such situations in private; however, there is little information in the literature about the types of situations encountered and the decision- making processes used in these situations. Those discussions that were …
