Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations

Background: Adolescent childbirth continues as a public health concern, and investigation of postpartum posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and depression is important to inform future research and practice. Longitudinal studies exploring PTSS alone or in combination with depression are non-existent for postpartum adolescent populations. This study aimed to identify stress/PTSS and depression symptoms at 72 hours and three, six, and nine months postpartum, and determine if symptoms at each time point predicted later symptoms. Depressive Symptoms And Violence Exposure: Contributors To Repeat Pregnancies Among Adolescents, Cheryl Ann Anderson

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations

Depressive symptoms and violence exposure (VE) often cooccur and have been recognized to influence childbearing; contribution to repeat pregnancy is unclear and examined in this article. This cross-sectional, descriptive, study screened for depressive symptoms and VE among 193 adolescent mothers at a large county hospital in Southwestern United States. Repeat pregnancy and depressive symptoms characterized one-third and one-quarter of adolescents, respectively. Despite minimal disclosure of VE, repeat pregnancy was significantly influenced by child abuse and past traumatic life experiences. Assessments and interventions with adolescents should focus on frequency of repeat pregnancies and symptoms of depression and VE. Nurses and childbirth …

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations

In spite of the acknowledged importance of collecting family health information, methods of collecting, organizing, and storage of pedigree data are not uniformly utilized in practice, though several electronic tools have been developed for the purpose. Using electronic tools to gather health information may empower individuals to take responsibility in managing their family health history. The purpose of this study was to describe the feasibility and outcomes of introducing small groups to the My Family Health Portrait tool in faith-based communities using faith community nurses (FCNs). This pilot project adopted a mixed methods approach to assess the potential of an …

The Seven Rs Of Supporting Opinion And Avoiding Plagiarism, Joy Don Baker Nov 2012

The Seven Rs Of Supporting Opinion And Avoiding Plagiarism, Joy Don Baker

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations

Occasionally, plagiarism may occur because an individual simply does not understand the error made. However, perioperative nursing professionals need to take a stand that lack of knowledge is not acceptable and that it is imperative to attend to the six Rs. This is analogous to an RN who is scrubbed in being told, “Your glove is contaminated.” There should be no question in anyone's mind that the glove will be changed. Taking and using someone else's words or ideas is a breach of trust and authenticity to others and should not be considered a choice. Plagiarism is an act of …

Transmission Of Family Health Information Within Families, Patricia Newcomb, Barbara M. Raudonis, Diane Snow, Denise Cauble

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations

Background and Aims: A comprehensive family health history still offers the best data for calculating risk of most complex diseases, but lack of informant accuracy hinders its use. Young adults transitioning from the parental home to more independent university life may be poor historians. The purpose of this study was to describe the quality of family health information acquired by young university students and to characterize the process by which they learn family health facts. Methods: Thematic content analysis was applied to interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in diverse classes across disciplines at a public US university. Results: Two processes, …
