Health Promotion And Wellness Strategies And Self-Regulation Interventions For Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Graduates Preparing For The Nbcot Exam, Marcia Hamilton
Occupational Therapy Collection
New graduates of Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Programs are challenged with the preparation and successful completion of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) examination. The threat of not passing this exam is intensified due to the cost of the exam and lack of provisional licensing. Anecdotal experience of faculty in an OTA Program supports concern for new graduates as they report feelings of distress and anxiety, as they enter the one- to two-month period prior to the exam. An occupational role shift must occur during this transitional period, as the new graduates …
Aging With The Fmr1 Gene: A Life Course Perspective, Cornelia Lieb-Lundell
Aging With The Fmr1 Gene: A Life Course Perspective, Cornelia Lieb-Lundell
Physical Therapy Collection
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of three syndromes identified as a health condition related to fragile X mental retardation (FMR1) gene dysfunction. The other two conditions are Fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency syndrome (FXPOI) and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) which together are referred to as Fragile X-associated disorders (FXD). Even though the three conditions share a common genetic defect each one is a separate health condition that results in a variety of body function impairments such as motor delay, musculoskeletal issues related to low muscle tone, coordination limitations, ataxia, tremor, undefined muscle aches and pains; and, …

Three Faces Of Fragile X Syndrome, Cornelia Lieb-Lundell
Physical Therapy Collection
Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is well known and widely recognized in pediatrics. Less well known is that FXS, as an X-linked disorder of the FMR1 gene, is but one of three impairments that all have a common single-gene genetic basis. These three are labeled Fragile X-associated Disorders (FXD) and are, in turn, a part of a large group of impairments which have a collective name of trinucleotide repeat expansion disorders. Common to all three FXD disorders is that the x-gene carries a characteristic CGG expansion (of the DNA) that can range from 50-+200 (5-45 is normal) with premutation carriers having …

Attitudes And Beliefs Regarding Pain In Interprofessional Education: A Multifaceted Dilemma, Annie Burke-Doe, Kayla Smith, Kristen M. Johnson, Anna Edwards, Christopher J. Ivey, Ellen Lowe, Steve Laslovich, Christopher M. Ingstad, Jonathan P. Warren, Susan Mcnulty, Terri Roberts
Physical Therapy Collection
Purpose: To evaluate entry-level physical and occupational therapy student attitudes and beliefs toward treating a person with pain, at various levels of their didactic learning.
Description: Across health professions, pain education varies considerably with its curricula of pain definitions, management principles, and interprofessional collaboration. The result of this discord has led to a broad range of behaviors and attitudes among health professions and their students, which can ultimately affect a person’s participation in society. Literature supports the importance of a curriculum that addresses students’ attitudes and beliefs toward treating people in pain in an attempt to preclude the formation of …
Upsee Daisy! Gross Motor Outcomes After Dynamic Weight Bearing In Two Children With Truncal Hypotonia: A Case Series, Megan Flores, Kathleen Manella, Elizabeth Ardolino
Upsee Daisy! Gross Motor Outcomes After Dynamic Weight Bearing In Two Children With Truncal Hypotonia: A Case Series, Megan Flores, Kathleen Manella, Elizabeth Ardolino
Physical Therapy Collection
PURPOSE: The purpose of this case series was to report the impact of a home-based dynamic standing program on postural control and gross motor activity in two children with truncal hypotonia.
BACKGROUNDS/SIGNIFICANCE: Poor postural control associated with central hypotonia limits a child’s ability to interact with the environment, delaying attainment of developmental milestones such as sitting, crawling, standing and walking. Participation in social interactions with peers and caregivers may be restricted resulting in a decreased quality of life. Supported standing programs are commonly used to ameliorate impairments and optimize function in children with poor postural control. Increased social interactions, …

The Effects Of Closed Kinetic Chain And Endurance Exercises On Reducing Pain In A Child With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Case Report, Linda Duong, Megan Flores
Physical Therapy Collection
Background and Purpose: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by joint laxity, chronic pain, and joint instability. Often, children with EDS exhibit polyarthralgia and fatigue as their main symptoms. Although physical therapy is a mainstay of treatment for individuals with EDS, evidence is lacking for specific exercises or treatment strategies for management of pain. The purpose of this case report is to describe the effectiveness of closed kinetic chain and endurance exercises on reducing pain in a child with EDS.
Case Description: The child was a 9 year old girl diagnosed with EDS hypermobility type, and …
Experiential Learning Enhances Physical Therapist Student Confidence In Management Of Neurologically-Involved Adults And Children, Kristen Barta, Megan Flores, Anna Edwards
Experiential Learning Enhances Physical Therapist Student Confidence In Management Of Neurologically-Involved Adults And Children, Kristen Barta, Megan Flores, Anna Edwards
Physical Therapy Collection
Purpose/ Hypothesis: As physical therapy (PT) students advance through an entry-level professional program, clinical decision making skills improve, though self-confidence in treating individuals with neurological impairments does not. One technique to improve PT student self-confidence with this population is the addition of experiential learning opportunities, which uses direct student interaction with community volunteers to simulate clinical application of didactic material. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of experiential learning using community participants who were neurologically-involved, on PT students’ perceived self-confidence. It was hypothesized that PT students would report greater levels of self-confidence in their neurological …
