The Role Of Financial Insecurity And Expectations On Perspectives Of Mental Health Services Among Refugees, Jacqueline M. Siven
The Role Of Financial Insecurity And Expectations On Perspectives Of Mental Health Services Among Refugees, Jacqueline M. Siven
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how perspectives of mental health among refugees are situated within the realities of the refugee resettlement system, a population for which information on this issue is quite limited. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation with Congolese refugees and non-Congolese refugee-serving professionals in a major Florida city, this dissertation examines how perceptions of mental health and mental health services among refugees were affected by financial insecurity and disparities in expectations. Local Congolese refugees expected the American Dream; they believed that once they arrived they would find prosperity through hard work. Instead they experienced frustration and distress because the …

Providing Pathways To Coverage: A Case-Evaluation Of The Outreach And Enrollment Model At A Federally Qualified Health Center Network In South Central Florida., Florida Covering Kids & Families, Jodi Ray, Margeaux A. Chavez
Florida Covering Kids & Families
Objectives: Assess the outreach and enrollment strategies implemented by Florida Community Health Centers, Inc. (FCHC) to enroll eligible but not insured community members in Medicaid and other benefits programs.
Methods: Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 staff members and patients, conducted ethnographic observations, administered a short staff survey, and collected outreach related print materials for analysis. FCHC, Inc. provided enrollment numbers to compliment qualitative interview data about the program’s impact. Data were analyzed using Atlas.ti.
Results: Results suggest that FCHC’s outreach and enrollment model increases healthcare access for eligible, low-income and hard-to-reach patients in their service area who face barriers …

Florida Covering Kids & Families
Effective marketing and education through outreach strategies are critical to guarantee uninsured but eligible children enroll and retain coverage in Children’s Health Insurance Programs, such as Florida KidCare. The implementation of effective outreach can eliminate enrollment barriers. The authors cite that the tools for innovative practices for effective outreach strategies include: personal contact and involvement with an outreach coalition.

Florida Covering Kids & Families
Simple approaches to outreach can increase enrollment in CHIP. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2010) found community-based coalitions can be simple yet effective methods to communicate needed policy and practice changes to those “charged with implementing insurance coverage”. Community-based coalitions are able to bring to light enrollment and retention barriers increasing the awareness of stakeholders and hopefully, help to create effective solutions.

According to the Urban Institute, 3.4 million U.S. children aged 6-18 are eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) but are uninsured. These school-aged children make up about 68% of the total eligible but uninsured population. Child and family advocates have long considered schools to be valuable partners for Florida KidCare outreach.
Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell
Mangrove Response To Attack By A Root Boring Isopod: Root Repair Versus Architectural Modification, Robert Allen Brooks, Susan S. Bell
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
The nature of the plant-animal interaction between wood-boring isopods and the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle L. has been controversial, with discussion ranging from the damage caused by the isopod being detrimental to beneficial for the mangroves they attack. Initiation of lateral roots by the mangrove in response to isopod burrowing has been one of the most commonly cited examples as support for the concept of beneficial herbivory. In this study, the possibility of root repair as a response of Rhizophora to burrowing by Sphaeroma terebrans Bate was evaluated. Previously burrowed prop roots were tagged in the field and the fate …
Drift Macroalgal Abundance In Seagrass Beds: Investigating Large-Scale Associations With Physical And Biotic Attributes, Susan S. Bell, Margaret O. Hall
Drift Macroalgal Abundance In Seagrass Beds: Investigating Large-Scale Associations With Physical And Biotic Attributes, Susan S. Bell, Margaret O. Hall
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
The relationship between a suite of physical and biological factors and drift macroalgal abundance was examined in 12 seagrass sites spanning a distance of over 50 km within Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. Field sampling was conducted in December 1991, and drift algal abundance was determined by recording algal percent cover from 25 quadrants at each site. Additionally, drift macroalgae were collected from gridded plots and dry weight biomass measured. Sediment characteristics and seagrass biomass, shoot density, blade length and percent cover at each site were also determined. Likewise, position of site within Tampa Bay was categorized by spatial coordinates. Step-wise …
