Introduction: The purpose of this evidence-based practice Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to encourage thorough assessment of pain and anxiety prior to spinal surgery in order to identify the need for implementation of additional modalities, such as osteopathic interventions for pain and anxiety management. It is pertinent that as holistic providers we address this populations often missed psychological distress and ineffective pharmacological pain regimens to promote better patient outcomes.

Background/Purpose: Interest in remifentanil patient controlled analgesia (RPCA) as a treatment for labor pain has increased due to its unique pharmacodynamics and effectiveness on pain control among parturients. Despite its promise, RPCA remains infrequently used in the US. The purpose of this study was to 1) examine the implementation and acceptability of a new RPCA protocol in the labor and delivery ward of a mid-sized hospital, and 2) identify the attitudes and beliefs of healthcare workers in a real-world clinical setting.

Background/Rationale: Current evidence supports the presence of a positive relationship between increased physical pain and spiritual distress for those with advanced cancer and/or receiving palliative care services. This was accomplished through utilization of a validated pain assessment tool. The tool’s purpose was to identify high-risk patients for Emergency Department (ED) visits or unanticipated hospital admissions (UHA), within a second-year fellow Hematology/Oncology clinic.

Background: In 2010, more than 51.4 million procedures were performed in hospitals in the United States. Almost half of all patients had a surgical procedure prior to their hospital discharge and over 80% of patients experienced acute pain after surgery. When acute pain persists for two or more months after surgery, chronic pain develops, costing the United States up to $635 billion annually. Hispanics, in particular, disproportionately experience disparities in pain treatment as they are less likely to receive analgesics.
