Binding Interactions Of Biologically Relevant Molecules Studied Using Surface-Modified And Nanostructured Surfaces, Palak Sondhi

This research focuses on the field of surface nanobioscience, wherein different nanosurfaces that will be used as working electrodes in the electrochemical cell are manufactured and surface modified to understand the critical binding interactions between biologically significant molecules like proteins, carbohydrates, small drug molecules, and glycoproteins. This research is essential if we are to determine whether a synthetic molecule can serve as a therapeutic candidate or diagnose a disease in its early stages. In order to fully understand the binding interactions, the study begins with defining some of the fundamental concepts, principles, and analytical tools for biosensing.

Doubling Down On Sepsis: A Quality Improvement Project To Improve Sepsis Bundle Compliance On An Inpatient Oncology Unit, Kayla Slay

Problem: Sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the second most common cause of death in cancer patients. Early management of sepsis through use of sepsis bundles have been shown to improve patient outcomes, yet bundle adherence is unfortunately inconsistent.

Methods: A two-nurse team, called the Sepsis Sidekicks, was a process improvement initiative to increase compliance with the center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sepsis bundle and improve patient outcomes related to sepsis. The observational quality improvement project utilized a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model over a six-week period where quantitative data was collected using a retrospective chart review. …

Problem: Sepsis is the leading cause of hospitalized deaths in the United States and the leading cause of hospital readmissions. Each year, approximately 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis, and nearly 270,000 die due to sepsis. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the acquisition time of initial and repeat lactate levels once a sepsis bundle was activated.

Problem: Sepsis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and antibiotic administration within 60-minutes is a priority. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve sepsis patient’s outcomes by administering parenteral antibiotics within 60-minutes of a code sepsis (CS) activation.

Method: Observational descriptive design utilizing a retrospective medical record review over a three-month period in 2020 and 2021. A purposive sampling of adult patients from a Midwestern, metropolitan, Level II trauma and medical center emergency department (ED) were selected.

Carbohydrates (glycans) form the basis of all living organisms and, consequently, are ubiquitous both in nature as biologically active compounds and in medicine as pharmaceuticals. One important application of carbohydrate-based drugs (glycopharmaceuticals) is the treatment of microbial sepsis, an acute illness that causes 100,000+ human deaths annually in the US alone. Exposure of the patient’s blood system to E. coli bacteria causes a massive, and often fatal, immune response. Problem: According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2016), it is estimated that sepsis affects around 1.5 million individuals in the United States annually, causing the death of 250,000 individuals and being responsible for one out of three hospital deaths. One-fourth of patients who develop severe sepsis will die during their hospital stay. Delays in sepsis treatment contribute significantly to increased morbidity, mortality, and length of stay in the hospital. Background: Sepsis is a serious condition resulting in end organ damage and ultimately, death. Communication techniques for nurses and physicians on septic patients admitted to the hospital from the emergency department was evaluated. Paper communication was used in 2020 to facilitate serum diagnostic acquisition and antibiotic administration (i.e., sepsis bundle), but an electronic communication form was utilized in 2021.
