Spin Trapping Pharmaceutical Compositions And Methods For Use Thereof, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents
Spin trapping compositions in general have now been discovered to be effective in treating a variety of disorders, including disorders such as those arising from ischemia, infection, inflammation, exposure to radiation or cytotoxic compounds, not just of the central and peripheral nervous systems but of peripheral organ disease having a wide variety of etiologies. In the preferred embodiment, the compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for intravenous, oral, topical, or nasal/pulmonary administration. Other preferred spin-trapping agents include 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide, (DMPO), α-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone, (POBN), and (TEMPO) spin-trapping derivatives thereof. …
Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield
Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents
The present invention pertains to a method of protecting against neuron loss in a subject by administering a compound that protects against neuron loss by acting through a vitamin D receptor. Some of these compounds may prevent or retard neuron loss by regulating intraneuronal and/or peripheral calcium and phosphate levels. Other compounds of the invention act through a vitamin D receptor to protect against neuron loss through mechanisms not involving calcium or phosphate regulation. A preferred compound is a biologically active form of vitamin D, a precursor, metabolite, or analog of vitamin D. A preferred form of vitamin D is …
Laser Skin Graft Harvesting Apparatus And Related Method, David S. Kirn
Laser Skin Graft Harvesting Apparatus And Related Method, David S. Kirn
Surgery Faculty Patents
A laser dermatome is disclosed for harvesting and meshing grafts of skin. A roller driven by a motor lifts the leading edge of a portion of skin for cutting by a beam of light generated by a laser. Adhesive tape attached to the roller aids in lifting the portion of skin and is further utilized to secure the severed portion of skin to the roller. A stage mounted atop an axle supports the laser or a beam director. The movement of the stage is controlled by second and third motors which drive the stage along or rotate it about the …
Methods Of Treating Eye Conditions With Human Leukocyte Elastase (Hle) Inhibitory Agents, George A. Digenis, Charles Khouri
Methods Of Treating Eye Conditions With Human Leukocyte Elastase (Hle) Inhibitory Agents, George A. Digenis, Charles Khouri
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
A method of reducing corneal scarring or fibroblast proliferation comprises applying to an area of a subject's eye afflicted with the condition a corneal scar-fibroblast proliferation-reducing amount of a free or polymer-bound HLE inhibitory agent under conditions and for a period of time effective to attain the desired effect. A method of reducing neovascularization of corneal scar tissue comprises applying to an area of a subject's eye afflicted with the condition a neovascularization-inhibitory amount of a free or polymer-bound HLE inhibitory agent under conditions and for a period of time effective to attain the desired effect.

Formulations And Methods To Treat And Prevent Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, David E. Granstrom, Thomas Tobin
Veterinary Science Faculty Patents
The present invention provides formulations useful to treat EPM. It also provides methods to treat EPM in a horse in need of such treatment, comprising administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of a triazine-based anti-coccidial. Preferred are methods to treat EPM using clazuril, diclazuril, toltrazuril or letrazuril. The present invention also provides methods to prevent S. neurona infection in horses comprising administering a prophylactic amount of a triazine-based anticoccidial. Preferred is a method to prevent S. neurona infection by using clazuril, diclazuril, toltrazuril or letrazuril, alone or in combination with other known therapeutics.
Transgenic Mice Which Overexpress Neurotrophin-3 (Nt-3) And Method Of Use, Kathryn M. Albers, Brian M. Davis
Transgenic Mice Which Overexpress Neurotrophin-3 (Nt-3) And Method Of Use, Kathryn M. Albers, Brian M. Davis
Neuroscience Faculty Patents
Transgenic mice express increased levels of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in epithelium when their ancestors are microinjected with the NT-3 gene. The NT-3 growth factor expressing transgenic mice are useful in the study of neurodegenerative disorders of the brain such as Parkinson's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease, of the spinal cord motor neurons such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and for testing drug candidates for the treatment of these diseases.
