Objective: To measure and compare the bond strength of zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns bonded to human teeth (enamel and dentin) using universal adhesive with resin cement and different light curing protocols. Methods: Sixty extracted sound non carious human teeth (second premolars) were stored in formalternate solution (FormalternateTM, Concentrate, 500 mL, Canada) and the roots were notched and mounted into acrylic resin (Yates Motloid, USA). Flat surface preparation was done on the occlusal surface of the samples using model trimmer. The surface area of the specimens was measured with digital light microscopy. Samples were randomly divided into six groups of 10 …

Mucus Adhesion As A Therapeutic Target In Cystic Fibrosis, Courtney Fernandez Petty Jan 2018

Mucus Adhesion As A Therapeutic Target In Cystic Fibrosis, Courtney Fernandez Petty

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease resulting from mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. CFTR is an ion channel responsible for proper movement of chloride and bicarbonate ions across the apical cell surface. Defective CFTR results in an absence of bicarbonate transport, which functions in part to chelate Ca2+, a divalent cation found in abundance in mucin granules in normal conditions; this yields a hyperviscous and adhesive mucus on the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of patients with CF. Bronchial mucins are glycosylated proteins with neutral and negative sugars modified by negatively charged sialic and neuraminic …

Retention Of Zirconia Crowns Following Different Bonding Protocols, Suruchi Lamba

All ETDs from UAB

Objective: To measure and compare the retention of zirconia crowns cemented with Ceramir (Calcium phosphate-based Bioactive Cement), RelyX Luting Plus (RMGI Cement) and RelyX Unicem (Self-adhesive resin cement) to extracted teeth following thermocycling. Methods: 30 sound extracted non-carious human molars were collected following IRB approval. The selected molars were notched at the roots and mounted into PVC molds filled with acrylic resin (Yates Motloid, USA). The occlusal surface was ground flat on a model trimmer. The axial reductions were performed with a standardized crown preparation device using a Komet 5845KR (“onlay”) diamond bur. A 10 degree ramp was used to …

Retention Of Cad/Cam Crowns Luted With A Novel Biomimetic Cement, Nan Xiang Jan 2016

Retention Of Cad/Cam Crowns Luted With A Novel Biomimetic Cement, Nan Xiang

All ETDs from UAB

Objectives: To measure the tensile strength of e.max copings cemented with resin, calcium silicate and calcium phosphate cements following thermocycling. Methods: 40 extracted non-carious mandibular premolar teeth were examined and selected using Keyence microscope for no carious cracks etc.were mounted in acrylic. The teeth were placed in a lathe and prepared to uniform dimensions (22° total taper) using a flat-end tapered diamond bur (846.11.025HP, Brasseler) and a 3mm preparation height. The surface area of the prepared surface was calculated with digital microscopy. The teeth were scanned with a Cerec 3 (Sirona) digital scanner. E.max crowns were milled using Cerec 3 …

Retention Of Cad/Cam Crowns Luted With Resin Cements And Rmgi, Shruti Sushilkumar Sonavane

All ETDs from UAB

Objectives: To measure retention of lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Viva-dent) and zirconia reinforced lithium disilicate (CELTRATM DUO, Dentsply) copings luted using resin cements and resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Methods: 110 Extracted human, non-carious mandibular 2nd premolars (n=10) were embedded in PVC cylinders with acrylic resin and placed into a lathe to produce a uni-form crown preparation (22°-convergence & 3mm-height). Following the orientation groove placement (69L bur), preparations were scanned and milled using a CEREC 3D/Sirona machine to produce e.max and CELTRATM DUO crowns. Preparations were imaged with a digital microscope (Keyence/VHX-600-20X) and the surface area of each crown …

Il-8 Is Necessary And Sufficient For X-Ray Radiation Enhanced Endothelial Adhesion., Stephen Kyle Babitz

All ETDs from UAB

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a potent inflammatory stimulus to the human body. In the vasculature, inflammation is a major contributing factor for atherosclerosis. In addition, radiation from several sources has been linked with increased risk for multiple cardiovascular complications. A key compnent of radiation associated inflammation is an increase in the adhesiveness of the endothelium which leads to a pathogenic accumulation of leukocytes in the vascular wall. This is one of the initial steps in vascular inflammation and leads to a number of adverse complications such as heart disease and stroke. The molecular mechanisms behind radiaton enhanced endothelial adhesion have …

Multiple Human Itgam Variants Alter Mac-1, Fcgamma Receptor And Tlr Functions On Neutrophils, Yebin Zhou Jan 2014

Multiple Human Itgam Variants Alter Mac-1, Fcgamma Receptor And Tlr Functions On Neutrophils, Yebin Zhou

All ETDs from UAB

Multiple studies have demonstrated that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ITGAM locus (including the non-synonymous SNPs rs1143679, rs1143678 and rs1143683) are associated with SLE. ITGAM encodes the protein CD11b, a subunit of the ß2 integrin Mac-1. The purpose of this work was to determine the effects of ITGAM genetic variation on the biological functions of neutrophil Mac-1. Neutrophils from ITGAM genotyped and sequenced healthy donors were isolated for functional studies. The phagocytic capacity of neutrophil ITGAM variants was probed with complement coated erythrocytes, serum treated zymosan, heat treated zymosan and IgG coated erythrocytes. The adhesion capacity of ITGAM variants, in …

Exposure to radiation from a variety of sources is associated with increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Since radiation also induces inflammation, a possible mechanism is a change in the adhesiveness of vascular endothelial cells, triggering pro-atherogenic accumulation of leukocytes. To investigate this mechanism at the cellular level, the effect of xrays, iron (Fe56) ions, and protons on adhesiveness of cultured human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) was determined. HAECs were grown as monolayers and exposed to 0 to 30 Gy X-rays, 0, 2, and 5 Gy Fe56 ions, and 0, 0.5, and 2 Gy protons followed by measurement of …
