Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Management of solid tumors involving the skull base are primarily managed with surgery and radiation, though proximity to important vascular and neuroanatomic structures often limit the extent of resection and permissible radiation dose. Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumor in adults, and although the majority of skull base meningiomas are low-grade, their location in proximity to critical anatomical structures precludes aggressive surgical resection, and larger tumors are often resistant to radiation treatment. In patients with clinically aggressive, unresectable meningiomas, several molecular biomarkers of angiogenesis, as well as genetic mutations (SMO, AKT1, PIK3CA, KLF4, POLR2, SMARCE1, and TRAF7), have …

Lessons Learned

  • Based on our criteria, most medications can be administered in the home setting.
  • A major barrier to administration at home is stability of medications at room temperature. This issue can be addressed by transporting and storing the medication in a refrigerated container.
  • Expectedly, injectable drugs and medications with short infusion times that are stable at room temperature would be easiest to administer at home.

Phase 1

Introduction: Therapeutic utilization of medicinal cannabis for symptom management in oncology patients is a burgeoning area of research focus. We hypothesize that medicinal cannabis use can result in subjective improvements in quality of life (QOL) metrics for cancer patients.

Methods: Adult palliative care patients at a medical oncology clinic are consented to the study after being certified to access medicinal cannabis. After three months, subjective changes in QOL, including well-being, financial burden, pain, chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), and other categories are recorded via telephone interview. Responses are documented with a numerical Likert scale (from 1-5, with a score …
