An influential model of the neural mechanisms of creative thought suggests that creativity is manifested in the joint contributions of the Default Mode Network (DMN; a set of regions in the medial PFC, lateral and medial parietal cortex, and the medial temporal lobes) and the executive networks within the dorsolateral PFC. Background: Heuristics, commonly known for introducing bias, are now being standardized to reduce biases in clinical decision-making (CDM). In a healthcare environment that recognizes the importance of clinical creativity, it remains unclear how standardized heuristics such as the fast-and-frugal model impact creative features of CDM. One framework of CDM, proposed by Engebresten et al., emphasizes the importance of uncertainty and creativity through four aspects: imagination, reflective questioning, understanding and critical judgment.

Recent studies have highlighted both similarities and differences between the cognitive processing that underpins memory retrieval and that which underpins creative thinking. To date, studies have focused more heavily on the Alternative Uses task, but fewer studies have investigated the processing underpinning other idea generation tasks. This study examines both Alternative Uses and Consequences idea generation with a methods pulled from cognitive psychology, and a novel method for evaluating the creativity of such responses.
