Genetic Association Analysis Of Erbb4 Polymorphisms With The Risk Ofschizophrenia Susceptibility In A Jordanian Population Of Arab Descent, Laith Aleitan, Sahar Al-Habahbeh, Rami Alkhatib

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The ERBB4 gene encodes a transmembrane tyrosine kinase and is considered to be one of the risk genes of schizophrenia. Although there is evidence of the roles of genes and the environment in the etiology of schizophrenia, a comprehensive biological and genetic background of the disease is still lacking. The aim of this study is to assess whether genetic variation in the human ERBB4 gene is associated with vulnerability to schizophrenia in the Jordanian Arab population. Materials and methods: A total of 185 inpatients with schizophrenia participated in this study and 195 healthy genetically homogeneous individuals were also used …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to compare metabolite levels of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG), thalamus, and hippocampus in patients with chronic schizophrenia (CSPs) and first psychotic episode patients (FEPs) by the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Materials and methods: Thirty CSPs, 20 FEPs, and 30 healthy subjects participated in this study. N-Acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine, choline (Cho), and myoinositol levels of the DLPFC, ACG, thalamus, and hippocampus were measured by 1H-MRS. Results: It was determined that the NAA/Cho ratio was lower in both the FEPs and CSPs than the healthy controls in the …

Total White Blood Cell Count, Liver Enzymes, And Metabolic Syndrome In Schizophrenia, Görkem Karakaş Uğurlu, Semra Ulusoy Kaymak, Mustafa Uğurlu, Si̇bel Örsel, Ali̇ Çayköylü

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an important clinical issue in patients with schizophrenia, but its associated factors are still ambiguous. The aim of the present study was to test whether there are any associations between MetS and white blood cell (WBC) levels, liver enzymes, or sociodemographic variables. Materials and methods: The study included 91 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. We used the National Cholesterol Education Program's Third Adult Treatment Protocol criteria to evaluate MetS in patients. Schizophrenia patients with MetS were compared with those without MetS on the basis of demographic and clinical characteristics and total WBC counts. We …

Burnout In Caregivers Of Patients With Schizophrenia, Ahmet Kokurcan, Ayşe Gül Yilmaz Özpolat, Ali̇ Kemal Göğüş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To evaluate the burnout of schizophrenia patients' caregivers and to determine the possible relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, symptomatology, perceived social support, and the burnout profile of the caregivers. Materials and methods: Subjects included in the study are 76 schizophrenia patients, diagnosed according to DSM-IV-TR criteria, and their caregivers. A sociodemographic form, the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms, and the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms were applied to evaluate the severity of the symptoms. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Caregivers and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were applied to the caregivers of the patients. …

Self-Perception Of Quality Of Life In Patients Treated With Antipsychotics, Lorena Dima, Daniel Vasile, Liliana Rogozae, Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq, Shazia Anwer Bukhari, Marius Moga Jan 2015

Self-Perception Of Quality Of Life In Patients Treated With Antipsychotics, Lorena Dima, Daniel Vasile, Liliana Rogozae, Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq, Shazia Anwer Bukhari, Marius Moga

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Despite extensive research, normal functionality remains problematic in patients with schizophrenia. Issues such as quality of life, subjective well-being, or psychosocial performance are currently objectives of interest. There are limited data collected prospectively on patients' perception of quality of life as compared between treatment groups, especially in developing countries. The aim of the present study was to analyze the evolution of patients' reported quality of life in patients with schizophrenia or related disorders treated with antipsychotics, in naturalistic settings. Materials and methods: The study was designed as a 12-month prospective observational study of 131 subjects with schizophrenia or related …

Possible Role Of Toxoplasmosis In Patients With First-Episode Schizophrenia*, Mehmet Tanyüksel, Özcan Uzun, Engi̇n Araz, Özgür Koru, Cahi̇t Babür

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the possible relationship between toxoplasmosis and patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES). Materials and methods: Seventy-three subjects with FES (15-54 years old; mean: 23.4 years) and 40 healthy individuals (20-54 years old; mean: 30.3 years) were enrolled in the study. Most of the FES patients (90.4%) and the control individuals (95.0%) were male. Specific IgG and IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the total amount of antibodies was investigated with the Sabin-Feldman dye test (SFDT). Results: Compared to the control individuals, study subjects had significantly more toxoplasmosis-like symptoms and more cats in …

Dermatoglyphics As Markers Of Prenatal Disturbances In Schizophrenia: A Case-Control Study, Bi̇rsen Özyurt, Ahmet Songur, Mustafa Sarsilmaz, Ömer Akyol, Mustafa Namli, Reha Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Several studies have reported the importance of dermatoglyphics as markers of a prenatal disturbance in patients with schizophrenia. Due to the fact that finger- and handprints are formed by the end of the second trimester, they may provide clues to disturbances in early development. The aim of this study was to determine specific dermatoglyphical frequencies in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and normal controls. Materials and methods: Fingerprints and palm prints were obtained from 45 schizophrenic patients as well as 45 healthy controls. The dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers (total finger ridge count [TFRC]) and palms (a-b, b-c, and …

We investigated whether rCBF values obtained with the SPECT technique are different in schizophrenics with predominantly positive or negative symptoms and assessed the biological underpinnings of psychotic phenomena, which has been done repeatedly in the past, with somewhat varied results. Twenty-nine schizophrenic patients were examined to investigate the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and psychopathology according to SANS, SAPS and BPRS scores. Using the Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT method at rest, rCBF was assessed in 15 patients with predominantly positive (group I) and 14 with predominantly negative (group II) symptoms. Ten age-matched normal healthy volunteers comprised the control group. …
