Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to compare two nonsteroidal antiin ammatory agents in relation to pain, swelling, and trismus following impacted third molar surgery. Materials and methods: The study was a randomized and a double-blinded study and included 50 healthy individuals. A er the operation, patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups in which diclofenac potassium and tenoxicam were used. Impacted third molars were surgically extracted with local anesthesia. Pain was assessed postoperatively by visual analog scale at the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 12th, 24th, and 48th hours and on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days. Swelling was evaluated using the method …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aims to investigate the effects of thoracic epidural analgesia, before and after surgical incision and in the postoperative period, on thoracotomy pain and stress response. Materials and methods: A total of 45 patients who were scheduled for posterolateral thoracotomy were included in this study. A combination of epidural levobupivacaine and morphine was administered as a bolus before incision (Group 1; n=15), after incision (Group 2; n=15), or at the end of surgery (Group 3; n=15). Additionally, infusion was used in Group 1 and Group 2 during operation. Postoperative patient-controlled epidural analgesia infusion pumps were connected to all …

Reliability And Validity Of The Turkish Version Of Pain Assessment Checklist For Seniorswith Limited Ability To Communicate (Pacslac-T), Öznur Büyükturan, Buket Büyükturan, Aysu Yeti̇ş, Mehmet İlki̇n Naharci, Nuray Kirdi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to assess validity and reliability of the Turkish version of Pain Assessment Checklist for Seniors with Limited Ability to Communicate (PACSLAC-T). Materials and methods: The individuals who met inclusion criteria of the study were in patients of a hospital and a long-term care facility. Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE), Cornell Dementia Depression Scale (CDDS), Global Deterioration Scale (GDS), visual analogue scale (VAS), and PACSLAC-T were administered to all subjects. The scales were repeated with an interval of two weeks for test-retest reliability. Results: A total of 112 patients with dementia were included in the study. The …

Patient Symptoms And Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlationin Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangement, Osman Akdağ, Gökçe Yildiran, Mehtap Karameşe Jan 2018

Patient Symptoms And Magnetic Resonance Imaging Correlationin Temporomandibular Joint Internal Derangement, Osman Akdağ, Gökçe Yildiran, Mehtap Karameşe

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangements consist of reduced and nonreduced disc dislocations and are often diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The main symptom of these derangements is TMJ pain. This study aimed to evaluate whether there is a correlation between TMJ pain and disc dislocation. Materials and methods: One hundred and four patients experiencing pain were evaluated retrospectively with the examination charts that we use routinely in our clinics and MRI. Patients were separated into two main groups as MRI(+) and MRI(-) groups according to their internal derangement findings in MRI. Mean VAS levels were compared between these …
