Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Abstrat Background/aim: This study was performed to identify the characteristics distinguishing fatal and nonfatal cases of patients diagnosed with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). Materials and methods: A total of 92 patients with confirmed diagnosis of CCHF in 2009-2013 were included in the study. Results: A high level of urea and aPTT on the third day of hospital stay, diarrhea, somnolence, and the interval from the beginning of the symptoms to hospital admission were independently associated with fatality. Each 10-unit increase in aPTT and urea levels increased the fatality rate by 3.379-fold and 1.236-fold, respectively. Delay in hospital admission increased the …

Long-Term Assessment Of Coronary Care Unit Patient Profile And Outcomes: Analyses Of The 12-Years Patient Records, Selami̇ Doğan, Hüseyi̇n Dursun, Hüseyi̇n Can, Hülya Elli̇dokuz, Dayi̇mi̇ Kaya

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the patient profile, treatment, and outcomes of a coronary care unit (CCU) by retrospective screening of 12-year patient records. Materials and methods: The data of 13,463 patients admitted to the CCU of a tertiary referral hospital between 1 January 1997 and 30 June 2008 were collected. The patients were assessed with respect to demographics, admission diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Results: The mean age of patients was 61 ± 13 years (66.7%, male). While the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) accounted for 65%, the rate of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To investigate the effects of pulmonary hypertension on early clinical variables in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Materials and methods: The preoperative echocardiographic data of patients who underwent isolated coronary artery bypass surgery were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 1244 patients were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups: one group consisted of patients with systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) values equal to or greater than 30 mmHg (Group 1, n = 184), while the other group consisted of patients with SPAP values below 30 mmHg (Group 2, n = 1060). Results: Early …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate if the modified ACEF (age, creatinine, and ejection fraction) score is a predictor of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events during 1 year of follow-up in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Materials and methods: We retrospectively enrolled 1632 consecutive patients who were admitted to our emergency department diagnosed with STEMI within 12 h of chest pain and treated with primary PCI. The modified ACEF score, determined with a simplified scoring system, was calculated. The patients were grouped into tertiles according to this …

Evaluation Of Epidemiological Characteristics And Risk Factors Affecting Mortality In Patients With Candidemia, Fatma Yilmaz Karadağ, Pinar Ergen, Özlem Aydin, Arzu Doğru, Berri̇n Tanidir, Mustafa Haluk Vahaboğlu Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Epidemiological Characteristics And Risk Factors Affecting Mortality In Patients With Candidemia, Fatma Yilmaz Karadağ, Pinar Ergen, Özlem Aydin, Arzu Doğru, Berri̇n Tanidir, Mustafa Haluk Vahaboğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine epidemiologic characters of patients with candidemia and to evaluate risk factors that can affect mortality rates among these patients. Materials and methods: Patients admitted to the İstanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Training Hospital between 2009 and 2011 who had a positive blood culture for Candida spp. during hospitalization were studied retrospectively for demographic characteristics and risk factors. Statistical comparisons were estimated with the Stata 12 package. Independent variables associated with mortality were estimated by Cox regression analyses. Results: A total of 89 patients were identified with a positive blood culture. Of the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: There is limited information about the rate and modifiers of mortality in noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Materials and methods: This study enrolled a total of 56 bronchiectasis patients. Patients' body mass index, smoking habit, previous therapies, comorbid disorders, history of vaccination, bronchiectasis type and radiological extent, arterial blood gas analysis, respiratory function tests, and laboratory results were recorded. Results: After a follow-up of 65.38 ± 18.62 months the overall mortality rate was 35.7%. The mean survival duration was 46.42 ± 8.25 months. Advanced age significantly increased mortality (HR: 2.031; CI: 0.991?4.072, P = 0.035). A significant correlation was found between …
