Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To compare insulin resistance and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) between obese, morbidly obese, and healthy women and demonstrate whether there is a relation between these parameters, focusing mainly on morbidly obese women. Materials and methods: Twenty-five morbidly obese women (body mass index (BMI) => 40 kg/m^²), 25 obese women (BMI 30-39.9 kg/m^²), and 25 age-matched healthy women (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m^²) were recruited for the study. None of the subjects had diabetes mellitus. BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, lipid profiles, fasting glucose and insulin levels, insulin resistance (by HOMA), and IMT (common carotid, internal carotid, and bifurcation measurements) were compared among the 3 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To evaluate the total homocysteine (tHcy) level, a risk factor for atherosclerosis, atherothrombosis, and insulin resistance, for sex and pubertal state differences in obese children. Its relationship with metabolic and anthropometric parameters was also investigated. Materials and methods: The study involved obese children with a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile who presented with the complaint of excessive weight gain, and healthy children with a BMI below the 85th percentile. Results: The study included 100 obese (mean age: 10.2 ± 2.7 years) and 71 healthy nonobese (mean age: 10.9 ± 2.6) children. A comparison of the data from …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the correlation between vitamin B12 and body mass index (BMI) along with insulin resistance (IR) in middle-aged obese women. Materials and methods: The study was designed as a case-control study. The study group included middle-aged obese women and the control group included aged-matched lean women. Weight, height, and hip and waist circumferences were measured. Biochemical parameters such as fasting and postprandial glucose, vitamin B12 and folic acid levels, and lipid profiles were assayed. Results: Enrolled in the study were 116 middle-aged obese and 103 aged-matched healthy lean women. The vitamin B12 level of the obese women was significantly …
