Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of the study is to assess expression levels of CPEB4, APC, TRIP13, EIF2S3, EIF4A1, IFNg, PIK3CA and CTNNB1 genes in tumors and peripheral bloods of colorectal cancer patients in stages I-IV. Materials and methods: The mRNA levels of the genes were determined in tumor tissues and peripheral blood samples of 45 colorectal cancer patients and colon tissues and peripheral blood samples of 5 healthy individuals. Real-time polymerase chain reaction method was used for the analysis. Results: The mRNA level of the CPEB4 gene was significantly downregulated in colorectal tumor tissues and was upregulated in the peripheral blood …

Evaluation Of Serum Cxc Chemokine Ligand 16 (Cxcl16) As A Novel Inflammatory Biomarker Or Familial Mediterranean Fever Disease, Taner Akyol, Tolga Düzenli̇, Alpaslan Tanoğlu Jan 2021

Evaluation Of Serum Cxc Chemokine Ligand 16 (Cxcl16) As A Novel Inflammatory Biomarker Or Familial Mediterranean Fever Disease, Taner Akyol, Tolga Düzenli̇, Alpaslan Tanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a disease that is mainly diagnosed with clinical features. Several wellknown inflammatory markers increase in FMF. However, there is still a need for diagnostic tests for specifying FMF and monitoring inflammatory activity. CXCL16 is a chemokine produced by inflammatory cells that demonstrate efficacy in the acute phase response. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between CXCL16 levels and FMF disease and to evaluate CXCL16 levels as a novel biomarker for FMF. Materials and methods: Fifty-three male patients diagnosed with FMF and sixty healthy individuals were included in this crosssectional study. Blood …

Peripheral Blood Soluble Elastin And Elastase As Auxiliary Diagnostic Indicators Forcoronary Artery Ectasia, Ruifeng Liu, Qianqian Sheng, Siwen Liang, Huiqiang Zhao Jan 2021

Peripheral Blood Soluble Elastin And Elastase As Auxiliary Diagnostic Indicators Forcoronary Artery Ectasia, Ruifeng Liu, Qianqian Sheng, Siwen Liang, Huiqiang Zhao

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Damage to elastin fibres in coronary media might lead to coronary artery ectasia (CAE). This study evaluated whether CAE can be distinguished by detecting circulating soluble elastin (s-elastin), which is a degradation product of elastin fibres, and elastase, which is the main enzyme of elastin fibres. Materials and methods: Fifty-eight patients with CAE, 58 with coronary heart disease (CHD) and 61 with relatively normal coronary arteries, were included. Circulating s-elastin and elastase were measured, and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to demonstrate their respective optimal cut-off values for predicting CAE. Results: The concentrations of s-elastin and elastase were …

Investigating Differential Mirna Expression Profiling Using Serum And Urine Specimensfor Detecting Potential Biomarkers For Early Prostate Cancer Diagnosis, Sevde Hasanoğlu, Beyza Servet Göncü, Emrah Yücesan, Sezen Atasoy, Yunus Kayali, Nur Özten Kandaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known up-to-date candidate biomarkers for several diseases. In addition, obtaining miRNA from different body fluids such as serum, plasma, saliva, and urine is relatively easy to handle. Herein we aimed to detect miRNAs as biomarkers for early stage prostate cancer (PC). For this purpose, we used urine and serum samples to detect any significant differences in miRNA profiles between patients and healthy controls. Materials and methods: Total ribonucleic acid (RNA) in urine and serum samples were isolated from eight untreated PC patients, thirty healthy individuals were screened for miRNA profile, and candidate miRNAs were validated. Whole …

Association Between Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis And Circulating Micrornas: Apreliminary Study From Turkey, Fatma Kalayci Yüksek, Cenk Kiğ, Medi̇ha Gönenç Ortaköylü, Meltem Uzun Jan 2021

Association Between Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis And Circulating Micrornas: Apreliminary Study From Turkey, Fatma Kalayci Yüksek, Cenk Kiğ, Medi̇ha Gönenç Ortaköylü, Meltem Uzun

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Tuberculosis is a public health problem that still remains significant. For prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis more effective novel biomarkers are needed. MicroRNAs can regulate innate and adaptive immune responses, alter host-pathogen interactions, and affect progression of diseases. The relationship between microRNA expression and active pulmonary tuberculosis (APT) has not yet been investigated in the Turkish population. We aimed to test the potential diagnostic value of some microRNAs whose levels were previously reported to be altered in APT patients. Materials and methods: Using two different references (U6 and miR-93), we compared the expression levels of potentially important microRNAs …
