Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this prospective observational study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum levels of vitamin D and acute postoperative pain scores, as well as opioid analgesic consumption in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Materials and methods: The study was performed in the Medical Faculty Hospital, from April 2020 to April 2021. Postoperative visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, total tramadol consumption, number of requests on patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) were compared between the vitamin D deficient (≤20 ng/mL; n = 25) and vitamin D nondeficient (>20 ng/mL; n = 55) groups at five time points (T0: in the recovery …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is a method for postoperative pain management. Studies on children are gradually increasing. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate effectiveness of TAP block on pain control, its side effects, and parental satisfaction levels in children. Material and methods: Study included patients operated between January 2019 and December 2020 in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine. Total of 97 patients (35 girls, 62 boys) between 5 and 18 years who had an ultrasound guided TAP block for lower abdominal or inguinal surgery were examined retrospectively. TAP block application time, hemodynamic variables, postoperative pain …

Can Postoperative Pain Be Predicted? New Parameter: Analgesia Nociception Index, Ali̇ Şefi̇k Köprülü, Ali̇ Haspolat, Yaşar Gökhan Gül, Nurşen Tanrikulu Jan 2020

Can Postoperative Pain Be Predicted? New Parameter: Analgesia Nociception Index, Ali̇ Şefi̇k Köprülü, Ali̇ Haspolat, Yaşar Gökhan Gül, Nurşen Tanrikulu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI) is a new method of identifying nociception-analgesia balance. In this study, we investigate the correlation between the ANI and numeric rating scale (NRS) values immediately before and after extubation. The NRS values were recorded in the postanesthesia care unit, in a group of patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, with the aim of evaluating the potential use of ANI values in the prediction of postoperative pain levels.Materials and methods: The ANI and NRS values, heartbeat rate (HR), systolic and diastolic arterial pressure (SAP/DAP), and oxygen saturation (SpO2) values of the patients were recorded into three …

The Effects Of Pregabalin And Adductor Canal Block On Postoperative Pain In Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Fatma Kavak Akelma, İlkay Baran Akkuş, Savaş Altinsoy, Derya Özkan, Jüli̇de Ergi̇l

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To determine the effectiveness of pregabalin and adductor canal block on opioid consumption, postoperative pain, and fast-tracking.Materials and methods: A total of 51 American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) classification I-II patients aged 18-70 years who were scheduled to undergo elective anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were included in the study. Patients were randomized into groups P, A, and C. Patients in group P (n = 16), received 150 mg of preoperative oral pregabalin, patients in group A (n = 17) received postoperative adductor canal blockade, and patients in group C (n = 18) received neither adductor canal block nor pregabalin. …

Effects Of Different Epidural Initiation Volumes On Postoperative Analgesia In Cesarean Section, Osman Kaçmaz, Nurçi̇n Gülhaş, Gülay Erdoğan Kayhan, Mahmut Durmuş Jan 2020

Effects Of Different Epidural Initiation Volumes On Postoperative Analgesia In Cesarean Section, Osman Kaçmaz, Nurçi̇n Gülhaş, Gülay Erdoğan Kayhan, Mahmut Durmuş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different epidural initiation volumes on postoperative pain scores, analgesic requirements, and side effects in pregnant women administered patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) for postoperative pain after cesarean sections. Materials and methods: Eighty-one pregnant women, aged 18-45 years, were included in this randomized, double-blind study. Combined spinal epidural anesthesia was administered for each cesarean section. The patients were divided into 3 groups and different volumes (20 mL, 10 mL, and 5 mL) of the study drug (0.0625% bupivacaine plus 2 μg/mL of fentanyl) were administered 90 min after the spinal …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The objective of this study was to examine the effect of addition of subanesthetic doses of ketamine to an epinephrine-lidocaine solution on postoperative pain, analgesic use, and patient comfort during rhinoplasties. Materials and methods: Ninety patients were randomly divided into three groups: Group L, lidocaine with epinephrine; Group K, lidocaine with epinephrine plus ketamine; and Group S (control group), physiological saline solution with epinephrine. The local anesthetic solution was injected as preincisionally with intranasal submucosal infiltration following induction of general anesthesia. We evaluated visual pain score, analgesic demand, Wilson sedation score, and antiemetic demand at 5, 15, and 30 …

Background/aim: Postoperative pain control constitutes a major problem and studies have focused on reducing opioid requirements using regional techniques. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of wound infiltration with lornoxicam on postoperative pain control following thyroidectomy. Materials and methods: In this prospective, randomized-controlled study, 80 patients scheduled for thyroidectomy were randomly assigned to 2 groups. After the thyroidectomy was performed, patients in group I underwent wound infiltration with 4 mg of lornoxicam and patients in group II received the same amount of saline. Rescue analgesia was provided with additional doses of lornoxicam delivered by an on-demand patient-controlled analgesia device. Total …
