Length Of Pregnancy And Birthweight Between Black And White Women, Christine Herdt

Master's Projects

The pregnancies of Black women are complicated by adverse outcomes, such as prematurity and low birthweight, at twice the rate of complications in pregnancies of White women (Taylor, Katz, & Moos, 1995). Early access to and adequate utilization of prenatal care services are essential for successful pregnancy and birth outcomes (Rowley, 1994). The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in length of pregnancy and birthweight between Black and White women at risk for preterm birth in a Preterm Delivery Prevention Program. A chart review of 79 clients enrolled in the Preterm Delivery Prevention Program …

The Differences In Health Beliefs And The Frequency Of Mammograms Among Older Women, Angela E. Hall Nov 1998

The Differences In Health Beliefs And The Frequency Of Mammograms Among Older Women, Angela E. Hall

Master's Projects

Increasing age is the primary risk factor for breast cancer, yet older women underutilize mammography for early detection. The purpose of this study was to explore any differences in perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and physician recommendation rate between older women who do and those who do not follow current mammogram screening guidelines. A convenience sample of women over 65 years old (N = 70), completed the Health Belief Model questionnaire on mammography. The findings indicate a statistical difference in the perceived benefits to mammograms between the two groups (t = 2.72, p = .008). There was no statistical difference in …

The Level Of Confidence Of School Nurses To Perform 46 Specified School Nursing Services, Camille Maysonave Brinks May 1998

The Level Of Confidence Of School Nurses To Perform 46 Specified School Nursing Services, Camille Maysonave Brinks

Master's Projects

The newly hired, novice school nurse often transitions from a baccalaureate program or an acute care setting to the school nurse role. This newly hired school nurse may be ill prepared for the wide range of services required in school nursing. The California, coastal school district where this pilot study took place, needed to develop an orientation program for newly hired school nurses. The purpose of the project was to ascertain confidence levels of novice school nurses in performing their new role as compared to experienced nurses. Benner's framework "From Novice to Expert" was used to guide this study. The …

Nurse Practitioners' Practices Related To Testicular Cancer And Testicular Self-Examination, April E. Schwegel May 1998

Nurse Practitioners' Practices Related To Testicular Cancer And Testicular Self-Examination, April E. Schwegel

Master's Projects

Testicular cancer remains the number one cancer for men age 15 through 35. Early detection is essential to decrease morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the extent to which California nurse practitioners screen for testicular cancer and the frequency of teaching testicular self-examination to patients. The study surveyed 425 adult or family nurse practitioners, currently practicing in the state of California, with a patient population that includes males age 15-35. The study supported the previous findings of Sladden and Dickinson (1995). Nurse practitioners do believe that testicular self-examination is an effective screening method …

Are We Asking The Right Questions? An Evaluation Of Client Reportability To Medical Providers Concerning Concurrent Use Of Alternative Therapies, Nektarios Butterfield May 1998

Are We Asking The Right Questions? An Evaluation Of Client Reportability To Medical Providers Concerning Concurrent Use Of Alternative Therapies, Nektarios Butterfield

Master's Projects

The use of alternative therapies in the United States is becoming more and more prevalent. One out of three Americans use alternative therapies and the failure to report the use of alternative therapies could affect the client's health. The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which clients use and report their use of alternative therapies to their medical care provider, as well as identifying barriers to reporting. A sample (N= 50) was selected randomly from a phone book. Of those 34 (68%) who used alternative therapies, 64% (n=32) reported use of alternative therapies while receiving medical …

Depression In Immigrant Chinese-American Elders, Sandy Chen Stokes May 1998

Depression In Immigrant Chinese-American Elders, Sandy Chen Stokes

Master's Projects

Depression in later life is a treatable mental disorder (Blazer, 1993) if it is recognized as depression. Because depressive disorders may often go unrecognized and untreated in the Chinese-American elderly population and because treatment for depression can dramatically improve the quality of these later years, correct diagnosis and intervention are vital.

The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of A Strength Training Program On Extremity Strength, Flexibility, And Balance Of Elderly Women, Patricia L. Murphy

Master's Projects

This quasi-experimental study, partially replicating that of Nelson and Wernick (1997), compares balance, flexibility, and extremity strength before and after an 8-week weight-bearing exercise class. Six women, aged 69 to 85, used 1-5 pound wrist weights and ankle weights up to 1 o pounds. Pre-and post-exercise measurements of biceps curls, seated leg lifts with weights, one leg stand, and seated stretches were gathered. Results showed improvement in every category, with the greatest improvement (41.6%) in balance and the least (8.3%) in trunk flexibility. Nursing is uniquely positioned to assist this population by promoting, developing, and implementing such exercise programs.

Nurse Practitioner Utilization Of Computer Technologies In Practice, Jo Ann Dumas Jan 1998

Nurse Practitioner Utilization Of Computer Technologies In Practice, Jo Ann Dumas

Master's Projects

The research demonstrated that nurse practitioners (NP's) underutilized computer applications that would improve client care in their practice. Computer use by NP's in public clinics, private practice, health maintenance organizations (HMO 's) and other settings in the greater San Francisco Bay area was described. The descriptive research used a non-experimental design. Subjects were 200 nurse practitioners. The survey instrument was developed by the researcher. Of 104 respondents, 86 (83%) used computers at work. "Obtaining client records from other agencies or departments" was rated the most useful computer application for improving client care. "Internet searches" was rated the next most useful …
