Trends In Patient Outcome Scores In Orthopaedic Oncology: A Systematic Review, David Le, Kelsey Martin, Sean C. Clark, Tae Won B. Kim
Research Day
Introduction: The field of orthopaedic oncology has trailed in defining trends in reported outcome measures (ROMs) over the last decade. Although the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) Score is a well-recognized ROM, new ROMs developed and established in literature have created difficulty in identifying the standard ROM within the field. The aim of our study is to identify trends in the use of ROMs in orthopaedic oncology over time, as well as the frequency and distribution among specific pathologies and orthopaedic journals.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted of all original articles reporting on topics relating to orthopaedic oncology in five …
Acrometastasis As A Rare Presentation Of Diffuse Malignancy, Jeremy Reich, Jonathan Boyce, Lee Kripke
Acrometastasis As A Rare Presentation Of Diffuse Malignancy, Jeremy Reich, Jonathan Boyce, Lee Kripke
Research Day
Cancer metastasis to the bone distal to the knee or elbow, also known as acrometastasis, is a rare but known finding in diffuse malignancy. We report a case of acrometastasis to the left second phalanx in a 70-year-old woman with a history of invasive breast carcinoma that was in remission for four years. On initial encounter in the emergency department, she had pain and swelling over the proximal (PIP) and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints with a lytic appearance on radiographs. A subsequent Adler PET scan demonstrated previously unknown metastatic disease in the right lower lung, mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes, …
Comparison Of Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Using Five Equations To Predict Acute Kidney Injury Following Hip Fracture Surgery, Efstratios A. Papadelis, Kevin L. Mekkawy, Yash P. Chaudhry, Micheal Raad, Raj M. Amin, Harpal S. Khanuja
Comparison Of Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Using Five Equations To Predict Acute Kidney Injury Following Hip Fracture Surgery, Efstratios A. Papadelis, Kevin L. Mekkawy, Yash P. Chaudhry, Micheal Raad, Raj M. Amin, Harpal S. Khanuja
Research Day
Introduction: Hip fractures are a common injury and a source of disability and mortality in the aging population. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and potentially serious complication following hip fracture surgery. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is used as an indicator of renal function. Several equations are commonly used to calculate eGFR. The purpose of this study was 1) to evaluate the agreement between five equations in calculating eGFR, and 2) to confirm which equation can best predict AKI in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.
Methods: 146,702 cases of surgical stabilization of hip fracture were queried from the …
Special Considerations In Facial Transplantation: A Systematic Review, Melanie Shpigel, Sammy Othman, Jason Cohn, Christopher Hill, Paige Bundrick, Gabriel F. Santiago, Chad Gordon
Special Considerations In Facial Transplantation: A Systematic Review, Melanie Shpigel, Sammy Othman, Jason Cohn, Christopher Hill, Paige Bundrick, Gabriel F. Santiago, Chad Gordon
Research Day
Background: Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) of the face is an exceedingly complex procedure, requiring extensive planning and surgical precision in order to successfully manage patients with facial disfigurements. This review aims to present an overview of the salient anatomic considerations in facial transplantation, as well as give attention to unique patient populations and special considerations.
Methods: A literature review was performed in search of articles pertaining to considerations in facial transplantation using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Articles selected for further review included full-text articles with an emphasis on specific anatomic defects and how they were addressed …
Soft Tissue Chondroma Of The Thumb, Harsha Upadhya, Darshdeep Singh
Soft Tissue Chondroma Of The Thumb, Harsha Upadhya, Darshdeep Singh
Research Day
A chondroma is a slow-growing, benign cartilaginous tumor. When a chondroma occurs in soft tissue without any involvement of the surrounding bone, it is known as a soft tissue chondroma which is an especially rare type of malignancy that has a predilection for the hands and feet. A soft tissue chondroma originates from either the synovial sheath of long tendons, para-articular tissues, or paratendinous soft tissues. This type of tumor can often be misdiagnosed as several different pathologies, including but not limited to, a ganglion cyst, osteochondroma, synovial chondromatosis, or even malignant examples such as a chondrosarcoma or synovial sarcoma. …
The Management Of Perioperative Immunosuppressant Medications For Rheumatoid Arthritis During Elective Hand Surgery, Kevin M. Klifto, Brian H. Cho, Scott D. Lifchez
The Management Of Perioperative Immunosuppressant Medications For Rheumatoid Arthritis During Elective Hand Surgery, Kevin M. Klifto, Brian H. Cho, Scott D. Lifchez
Research Day
Purpose: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a destructive inflammatory disease that commonly involves joints of the hand and wrist. Different recommendations exist for continuing or discontinuing immunosuppressant medications during the perioperative time period. The purpose of our study was to determine if continuing steroids, non-biologic DMARDs, and/or biologic DMARDs were associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications.
Methods: We performed a single-centered, retrospective review of a consecutive cohort of RA patients who had elective hand surgery by a single surgeon. Patients were included if they had a documented diagnosis of seropositive RA by a rheumatologist, and had elective …
