COPD affects millions of people globally and over $7 billion dollars is spent on COPD related hospitalizations in the U.S. annually. This poster includes information focused on COPD, the underlying pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, nursing care implications, and treatment.

Methods: Research articles within the last five years were obtained using keywords such as COPD, pathophysiology, treatment, prevention, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis from databases EBSCO and PubMed. The data and quality of these articles were assessed and information compiled …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of surgical procedures and can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. AKI can be described by a sudden decline in kidney function, evidenced by elevation of serum creatinine, elevated blood urea nitrogen levels, and a decreased glomerular filtration rate (McCance & Huether, 2018, p. 1360). Optimal perioperative management and recognition of patients at high risk for AKI is important in preventing the development of acute kidney injury.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that is not curable. HPV can damage cell DNA which increases the risk of oncogene expression; this leads to an increased risk of cancer. HPV is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer, among other types of cancers. Prevention is key because HPV is usually asymptomatic. The population at risk is anyone sexually active, including participation in oral sex. The health care provider should advocate for preventative measures against HPV. Overuse injuries are a significant health problem that affects the health and well-being of adolescent athletes. Almost 50 percent of sports-related injuries in the adolescent population are considered overuse injuries and half of these injuries are preventable. Overuse injuries occur over time when repetitive demands, placed on the musculoskeletal system, result in tissue damage. The purpose of the DNP project was to educate high school coaches on the identification and prevention of overuse injuries in adolescent athletes. Research has found a variety of mechanisms for ACL injuries. One mechanism that has been found is a decreased valgus control at the knee. One study found that that “the decreased active and passive controls of knee alignments may destabilize the knee and are purported to be measures related to increased risk of ACL injury in female athletes, as they mature” (Myer, Ford, Khoury, Succop, & Hewett, 2011, 248).
