Relationship Between Professional Identity And Clinical Leadership In Novice Registered Nurses, Susan Swart
Relationship Between Professional Identity And Clinical Leadership In Novice Registered Nurses, Susan Swart
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Novice Nurses are faced with the expectation that they be clinical leaders soon after graduation while educational programs are challenged with how to assist the student nurse in forming a strong sense of professional identity. The mixed methods, descriptive study used two established instruments, the Clinical Leadership Survey (CLS) and the Nurses Professional Values Scale -Revised (NPVS-R) to explore and compare the perceptions held by novice nurses who graduated from diploma, associate, baccalaureate, masters’ entry, and accelerated programs in a Midwestern state in order to assess the relationship between their self-perceived clinical leadership ability and their self-perceived sense of professional …
Customized Financial Interventions That May Affect Retention Rates In Nursing Programs, Joseph Rojek Ii
Customized Financial Interventions That May Affect Retention Rates In Nursing Programs, Joseph Rojek Ii
Scholar Week 2016 - present
With the cost of post-secondary education on the rise and retention rates of university students a major concern for university administrators, the author of the current study desired to explore the effect that a Financial Solutions Team (FST) had on improving the retention and graduation rates of undergraduate (RN-BSN) and graduate level (MSN) nursing students (n = 1030). The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enhanced FST processes in order to determine its impact on the one-year retention rates after a financial hold was placed on a nurse’s student account, and the graduation rates …
An Analysis Of Underrepresented Minorities' Exposure To Allied Health Fields, Loshay Willis
An Analysis Of Underrepresented Minorities' Exposure To Allied Health Fields, Loshay Willis
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Despite a more diverse U.S. population, racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the U.S. healthcare professions. Further, increasing the enrollment of Underrepresented Minority (URM) students in health professions is a challenging and urgent issue. The literature had not explored a comparison of racial and ethnic groups’ exposure to allied health professions. This current study investigated URM and non-URMs’ exposure to and knowledge of allied health fields; in order to determine, whether some of the groups are getting exposed differentially to different methods, and to identify the resources necessary to expose and provide knowledge of allied health professions to recruit …
Undergraduate And Graduate Communication Sciences And Disorders Students’ Views: The Doctoral Pursuit, Danielle R. Osmelak
Undergraduate And Graduate Communication Sciences And Disorders Students’ Views: The Doctoral Pursuit, Danielle R. Osmelak
Scholar Week 2016 - present
There is a recognized shortage of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) professionals who hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the field of CSD. The investigation into CSD students' views about pursuing a PhD is important to better understand and generate solutions to the PhD shortage. The purpose of this study was to explore CSD students' views in regards to pursuing a PhD and also investigate the relationship between CSD students' exposure to research and their views regarding the pursuit of a PhD. The quantitative study included undergraduate (n = 49) and graduate (n = 51) CSD …

The Effects Of Heart Medication On The Heart Rates Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Felicia A. Baer
The Effects Of Heart Medication On The Heart Rates Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Felicia A. Baer
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Background
Current models of human cardiac disease may be similar in anatomy and physiology, but are often expensive and tedious to work with. The current need is for a model organism that is more efficient to work with in lab while still an accurate model of human cardiac disease, of which Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel) is a candidate as it is a more efficient organism to work with in lab. To test whether D. mel could be used as a model for human cardiac disease, the medications atropine and propranolol hydrochloride were used. I hypothesized that atropine and …
Noncontact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries In Collegiate Female Soccer Players: The Effects Of A Four Week Prevention Program On Landing Kinematics, Tess Marcordes
Scholar Week 2016 - present
BACKGROUND: Noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are highly prevalent in soccer as quick changes in direction, stop-start motions, as well as jumping and landing often paired shooting or passing a ball are continuously occurring throughout a practice or match. Exaggeration of these movements paired with extreme joint motions increases the likelihood of ACL injury. An ACL injury can be detrimental to an athlete’s career, as 25% of athletes do not return to their previous level of play prior to injury. Research has shown that programs consisting of a combination of plyometric, balance, and strengthening exercises constitutes a greater prevention …

Grief Off-The-Clock: Supporting Hospice Professionals Through Personal Loss, Rachel A. Guimond
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Working with clients who die can have a major impact on the way professionals address their own grief. Daily exposure to the possibility of death alters the process of mourning and can leave professionals feeling disconnected from family and friends during times of grief. This presentation will look at the challenges that hospice workers, clergy members, social workers and other professionals face when they experience grief in their own lives. Evidence-based strategies for supporting professionals in their grief will also be explored.

Physical Activity Monitoring Through A Wearable Technological Device, Alissa Underhill
Scholar Week 2016 - present
PURPOSE: To assess the use of a wearable technological device for the increase in attainment of physical activity (PA) with the goal of preventing Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) through weight loss.
METHODS: Men and women over the age of 40, and at risk for prediabetes, were recruited. The study period was four months in length, with an initial four weeks of baseline PA testing, followed by 12 weeks of lifestyle intervention. Developing A Holistic Self-Care Plan For Nurses In A New Nurse Residency Program, Deanna Vankuren
Scholar Week 2016 - present
The art of nursing is focused on the whole patient. The holism of individuals includes the body, mind, and spirit connection. If one part of this triad is unhealthy, the others may suffer. Nurses provide holistic, individualized care to clients. They strive to function as caregivers who provide health and wellbeing through a holistic approach. In doing so, nurses provide compassionate care that often supersedes the self. The care provided often exceeds their personal self-care needs.
Unfortunately, a lack of self-care has the potential to cause damage to the nurse's body, mind and spirit. The purpose of this Doctorate of …
