Pain Education Training In New York State Physical Therapy Programs: What We Do Well, Where The Gaps Are, And What Can Be Improved, Joseph Tatta, Marcia Spoto, Joseph Lorenzetti

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Essential pain education produces graduates who are competent in contemporary pain management. Despite various educational resources, surveys demonstrate minimal pain content in entry-level physical therapist education programs. This paper examines 1) the learning content of pain education and faculty expertise teaching core pain content, 2) whether pain education content is sufficient to prepare physical therapists to meet the needs of contemporary pain management, and 3) whether standardization of pain education in entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs is advantageous. Methods: A pain education survey was developed and sent to all accredited DPT program directors in New York …

The Effectiveness Of Kinesiotaping For Patients With Fractured Ribs: A Single-Subject Experimental Design, Simone Dafoe, Leigh Rushworth, Kathy Stiller

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Kinesiotape is an elastic, adhesive tape applied to the skin that has been used extensively to reduce pain associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. Its use in the setting of fractured ribs is less clear. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the effect of kinesiotaping for patients with rib fracture(s) on pain levels, pulmonary function, and mobility. Method: We prospectively evaluated five patients admitted with fractured ribs using a single-subject experimental ABAB design. Each phase lasted 24 hours with kinesiotape applied during B phases. All participants received usual medical, nursing, and allied health care. Outcome measures included …

Medication Exposure Patterns In Primary Care Patients Prescribed Pharmacogenetically Actionable Opioids, Mitchell R. Knisely, Janet S. Carpenter, Marion E. Broome, Ann M. Holmes, Diane Von Ah, Todd Skaar, Claire Burke Draucker Aug 2018

Medication Exposure Patterns In Primary Care Patients Prescribed Pharmacogenetically Actionable Opioids, Mitchell R. Knisely, Janet S. Carpenter, Marion E. Broome, Ann M. Holmes, Diane Von Ah, Todd Skaar, Claire Burke Draucker

The Qualitative Report

Current approaches to assessing medication exposure fail to capture the complexity of the phenomenon and the context in which it occurs. This study’s purpose was to develop a typology of subgroups of patients who share common patterns of medication exposure. To create the typology, we used an exemplar sample of 30 patients in a large public healthcare system who had been prescribed the pharmacogenetically actionable opioids codeine or tramadol. Data related to medication exposure were drawn from large data repositories. Using a person-oriented qualitative approach, eight subgroups of patients who shared common patterns of medication exposure were identified. The subgroups …

“That Pain Is Genuine To Them”: Provider Perspectives On Chronic Pain In University Student Populations, Alexandra C.H. Nowakowski, Kaitlyn E. Barningham, Charlyn D. Buford, Martin Laguerre, J. E. Sumerau Jul 2017

“That Pain Is Genuine To Them”: Provider Perspectives On Chronic Pain In University Student Populations, Alexandra C.H. Nowakowski, Kaitlyn E. Barningham, Charlyn D. Buford, Martin Laguerre, J. E. Sumerau

The Qualitative Report

We explored provider attitudes about and experiences in chronic pain management for university student populations. Our central question was: “What do providers at a large university campus health care center experience in the process of offering pain management services?” We explored instrumental, behavioral, emotional, and attitudinal dimensions of our participants’ experiences using a qualitative case study approach. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 10 health care providers at the student health center for a large research university in Florida. Interviews captured providers’ background and experiences in providing pain management to student patients with diverse needs. We used grounded theory …
