Concrete concepts (e.g., BUTTON) can be experienced directly by the senses, whereas abstract concepts (e.g., FRIENDSHIP) cannot. Additionally, the mind may represent abstract concepts using more introspective, social, and emotional information than concrete concepts. Social difficulties are one defining feature of autism, and autistic individuals may use social camouflaging to hide these difficulties, but the precise nature of social processing in autism is not known. This study aims to explore possible links between autistic traits, autistic camouflaging, and mental representations of concepts. Knowing that there is no singular event that leads to learning a language, and factoring in the extent an individual’s culture can affect language learning, this study emphasizes the importance of a cross-linguistic approach to continue to broaden the scope of language acquisition research. The primary objective is to identify and analyze the critical commonalities in the initial stages of learning English and French as first languages through two major categories: speech/language and culture. It has been found across current studies and evaluations of stroke care and patient outcomes that there is a disparity in disability and mortality between male and female patients who have experienced stroke. The aforementioned studies did not identify the cause of this disparity, although a number of hypotheses for this phenomenon were provided. This study then conducted a preliminary survey of 130 participants, both men and women, aged 18-80 years old, to evaluate potential barriers to accessing stroke care and receiving treatment effectively. Within this project, we address the challenges faced by individuals, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), during toilet training, which often takes longer than neurotypical children. Practitioners who use traditional methods often overlook teaching children how to request bathroom use, especially among those who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. Drawing from literature and expert recommendations, we summarize the importance of teaching independence in bathroom use for children with complex communication needs by incorporating their AAC devices when teaching toilet training.

Although autism can be reliably diagnosed by 18 months of age, long wait times and limited access to qualified providers prevent families from obtaining diagnostic services. Trained speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are qualified to diagnose autism, ideally as part of a multidisciplinary team. SLPs working on early intervention (EI) teams are well-situated to help close this diagnostic wait time gap. Background: Despite decades of strategic initiatives, all-cause 30-day heart failure readmissions remain greater than 20% nationwide. Issues with medications post-discharge increases the risk of 30-day readmissions.

Local Problem: Heart failure readmission rates within 30 days of discharge remain above the organizational benchmark.

Methods: Quality improvement project utilizing pre- and post-evaluation readmission data from a convenience sample of hospitalized adult heart failure patients.

Interventions: A follow-up phone call from a nurse within 72 hours of hospital discharge to perform medication reconciliation.

While unclear in older populations within the US, individuals with asthma are disproportionally affected by depression relative to those without asthma. This work explores the associations between asthma, depression, sociodemographic, and disease-related factors in a US population ≥ 65 years of age.

Methods

A pooled cross-sectional analysis of Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) data was utilized to determine the association between asthma and depression from 2018 to 2020. Depression was defined as a score of ≥ 10 from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Disease-related variables were recorded if the subject met Medicare claims criteria for the calendar year. Background: Frequent acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) can lead to unfavorable patient outcomes and costly readmissions. Inadequate patient support during discharge and an inconsistent discharge process are factors contributing to high readmissions in this population.

Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to reduce COPD-related hospital readmissions by standardizing the discharge process for patients admitted with AECOPD and identify patient risk factors for readmission.

This dissertation explores the ways in which access acts as both a barrier and facilitator to healthy birth outcomes. In particular, access to food, maternity care, and Medicaid coverage of doula services are explored alongside low birthweight in this dissertation through both population health and health disparity lenses. Low birthweight is a leading cause of infant mortality and thought to reflect nations’ long-term public health problems such as maternal malnutrition and inadequate receipt of maternity care. As such, sufficient access to healthy food and maternity care is essential for healthy birth outcomes.

Purpose: Individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) are often offered English-only AAC systems that do not meet their language needs. Devices that host multiple languages often only offer one at a time.

Method: The authors reviewed the literature by searching relevant databases using a variety of search strings. Following our inclusionary and exclusionary criteria, 15 articles were yielded for analysis.
