Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioners’ Practices O F Assessment For The State O F Thriving Among Community-Based Elders, Judy Labonte

MSN Research Projects

The increasing life span of people within the developed world may produce major health problems for the elder. These health problems lead to premature declines in function and cognition. Many healthcare professionals do not recognize these declines until the need for institutionalized care is urgent. Research has demonstrated that healthcare professionals either fail to recognize or address these declines, contributing to poor outcomes for the elder and the exponential rise in healthcare expenses o f the Medicare and Medicaid funds. This exploratory, descriptive study was designed to examine the level of assessment by primary care family nurse practitioners (FNPs) for …

Rural Elders' Knowledge Of Nurse Practitioners As Health Care Providers, Tim Watson Aug 2001

Rural Elders' Knowledge Of Nurse Practitioners As Health Care Providers, Tim Watson

MSN Research Projects

The population of America is growing older every year. Thirteen percent of the population is at least 65 years old. Many elders have limited health care choices because fewer physicians are locating their practices in rural areas. Nurse practitioners are now practicing in underserved areas such as rural communities. The purpose of this descriptive exploratory study was to explore baseline knowledge of rural elders concerning the role of nurse practitioners as health care providers. Becker's Health Belief Model was used to guide the research. The research question was as follows: What is rural elders' knowledge of nurse practitioners as health …

Bedtime Routines And Sleep-Rest Patterns Of Elders, Leanne Lott Tew Aug 1999

Bedtime Routines And Sleep-Rest Patterns Of Elders, Leanne Lott Tew

MSN Research Projects

Changes in elders" sleep patterns such as a decrease in sleep time, an increase in sleep latency, and changes in the sleep cycle often lead to sleep that is lighter, shorter, and interrupted (Foreman & Wykle, 1995) . Studies in the past have suggested that the presence of a bedtime routine may enhance sleep, but only minimal research has been done. The purpose of this descriptive study was to further evaluate nightly bedtime routines and sleep-rest patterns of elders. Two research questions were generated: What are the bedtime routines of elders and what are the sleep-rest patterns of elders? Orem"s …

The Significance Of The Therapeutic Use Of Pets On Socialization With Elders In An Extended Care Facility, Lisa Byrd

MSN Research Projects

In the year 2020, 80% of the United States population will be over the age of 65 years (Fick, 1993). Elders frequently reside in extended care facilities and experience feelings of loneliness, depression, disorientation, and helplessness (McQuillen, 1985). The therapeutic use of pets has been shown to have positive effects on the socialization of elders. Most research has been conducted utilizing group therapy with a pet. This study focused on the benefits of therapeutic use of pets with the individual elder. The theoretical framework was based on the Neuman Systems Model. The purpose of this study was to determine the …

Effects Of Touch On Anxiety Levels In Elders Seeking Health Care, Simon Peter Redmon Ii Aug 1994

Effects Of Touch On Anxiety Levels In Elders Seeking Health Care, Simon Peter Redmon Ii

MSN Research Projects

Touch has been used for years by nurses and nurse practitioners in everyday practice both purposefully and incidentally. This touch has been in the form of therapeutic touch, massage, and coincidental. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the impact of touch, in the form of massage, on the reduction of anxiety levels in elders seeking health care. Watson's (19 79) Theory of Human Caring was the theoretical guide. Using Spielberger's (1983) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Questionnaire, data were collected from a control group of 6 subjects and an experimental group of 5 subjects. These subjects were recruited from …
