Background: The recovery from surgery can be very painful for some patients and require opioid management and longer hospital stays for unmanaged pain. Music has been a non-analgesic way of helping patients with chronic pain and recent studies have shown that music intraoperatively can greatly improve the patients' pain after surgery requiring general anesthesia.

Weekly Review Of An Academic Checklist To Operationalize Improvements To A Surgical Residency Program, Sean Francois, James Whiting, Kartikey Pandya, Jaswin Sawhney

Introduction: We report on the use of a weekly academic checklist to monitor proposed improvements to a surgical residency program.
Methods: A single-center, retrospective analysis of residency improvements with an academic checklist of quality initiatives reviewed weekly at morbidity and mortality conferences. The positive response rate for each of the 11 items were reviewed. Trends of positive responses during the year were reviewed. The effectiveness of the checklist was also assessed with 2 internal surveys completed by faculty and residents.

Background. The medical and surgical units within Maine Medical Center have seen an influx of patients with behavioral disturbances. Staff voice concerns regarding lack of knowledge and lack of support while treating patients with a medical condition and dual diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder with behavioral disturbances.
